Mileage added ^...Here's another tidbit for you guys....Starting with engine #1047885, late 2003, a new oil pump was issued for our cars....maybe the last piece of the puzzle, explaining post 1025836, 2002 failures?????

billman, you could be right. Originally I was speculating it was a temporary failure in a part manufacture or assembly during a specific production period based on the known VIN numbers, which admittedly is a small sample. The fact that it continued in '02 cars makes that speculation less likely. At one time the infamous 'oil bolt' was thought to be the issue but insiders suggested it was not. Clearly it's a puzzle.

To first time readers: You must keep things in their proper perspective. Do not go running around screaming 'the engine's going to blow, the engine's going to blow!" The total S2000 sales in the US is now 45,000. The total number of register members on this site is 36,000 (true, not all are owners). But, given these numbers, there has been less than 50 cars listed on this thread to date. So there is no cause for alarm.

I don't know how your motor could've been down 5 quarts though -- something sounds fishy. Maybe you did a lot of driving that month without checking it. Who knows? Still, 5 quarts down seems almost impossible in a month's time unless you were tracking the car.
Because of the fact that he had the #4 cyl failure, logic tells me that he lost the oil through the #4 cylinder. The fact that he lost 5 quarts (according to the dealer ) in 4,165 miles, tells me that he wasn't checking the oil level on a regular basis. Whether or not he checked the oil level on a regular basis, the fact is, he lost 5 quarts in 4,165 miles. Common sense tells me that a problem existed well before the failure at 8,165 miles and it would have been a matter of time even with frequent checking and adding of oil, that the engine was a ticking time bomb waiting to blow.

Even though the owner might not have frequently checked the oil level, the fact is, something caused the engine to lose an awful lot of oil.

Currently, my car is being serviced with head replacement. At first, my car was diagnosed with bent valves and the dealership as well as AHM made it sound like it was my over revving and that it wouldn't be covered but upon further examination, they said valve was not seated properly and now they are telling me that head will be replaced. Apparently, I had been driving with this stunted engine performance for the past 26 months. They will not charge me but what does all this mean?

I lost my first motor at 33000 miles. @ 8000rpms th e head dropped a valve guide. The valve bent open, check motor light came on. I drove the car home. As I drove the car the parts went from #3 cly to #2 to #1. #3 looked as if a shotgun went off. i worked for Honda at the time and my own dealer would not fix it. I took it to a dealer down the street and AHM put a new head and block in it

^How much does putting a new head cost? Is that a major work? Thanks for your input in advance.
