Default Should i change my oil?

I drive about no more than 500 miles (if im lucky) a month on my S. It's strickly my weekend car. I've been using mobil 1 since i could remember on this car. My buddy just told me that using synoil on my car that isn't a daily could be potentialy harmful. So i asked him what should i use? And he said Havoline, or motorcraft. (i guess motorcraft is ford oil). I asked him how often should i change it then and he said every 3000 or 3 months. I'm use to changing my oil twice a years, or about every 5-6 months. Should i take his advice and stop wasting my money on synoils. Or is he right and go back to primium refined oils.

Thanks.

3 months is a little bit excessive.

This is about right. I use synthetic and change it every 6-9 months. I average about 6,000 miles per year. If I were to drive it hard for prolonged periods of time, I would change it a lot sooner than 6-9 months.

since I am assuming your car has over 10k miles, you can change to a good synthetic such as mobil1, redline, amsoil, etc. Change it every 7500 miles under normal driving conditions, or every 6th months, whichever comes first. Changing synthetic every 3k miles is a complete waste of money.

even changing havoline every 3k or 3 months is a waste. i go 5000 miles on havoline's GF4.

so no, don't take your friend's advice. there is nothing wrong with doing what you're doing with your car. read the oil journals in the Under The Hood section to see more. in fact, what you're doing is great, because you need a longer OCI since you don't drive the car a lot. synthetic is perfect for you because you can get a good 6 months between changes.

I drive mine less then that every year (Approx 6000kms/3000miles annually). I use Amsoil 10W30 and change mine out every spring. Halfway into the summer Ill change the oil filter but leave the oil in. The oil stays very clean even after a year later. Changing it every 3 months is a big waste.

For weekend only car, synthetic oil is better than conventional. Since your yearly mileage is low, you should do 6 months OCI with conventional oil or 1 year OCI with synthetic oil.

If you really anal about oil change and have money to waste, then cut the OCI to half: 3 months with conventional oil or 6 months with synthetic oil, 3 months with synthetic is a big waste of money. If you decide to do 3 months oil change with conventional oil, then buy the cheapest SM/GF4 brand names oil, all of then are good for 3 months/3k miles OCI.
