Should my 2002's shift knob be adjustable?
Hi. This is my first post. Let's see if I do it right.
I'm a new owner. I took delivery of my 2002 Grand Prix White S2000 on April 15th. I love it! Once I get the hang of this forum, I may have many more questions, but here is my first. Should my 2002 have an adjusting nut under the shift knob? Apparently, other model years have one. Maybe I wouldn't care if it wasn't for the fact that the engraved gears on mine seem to be facing the wrong way. They face towards me, the driver, instead of facing the rear of the car. Is this the way it's supposed to be? Either way, it bugs me. I want the engraving to be in line w/ the motion of the gear positions. So, is mine missing the nut, or do the 2002s not have one? Can I put one on?
BTW, I may try one of those spherical aluminum knobs that I keep reading about here (Voodoo or the other), so this may not be an issue at that time. But for now, it is.
Thanks,
Gil

Yes, the shift knob is adjustable, so to speak. There is a 14mm nut below the knob that can be backed down so you can adjust the position of your knob. The knob and nut can then be screwed into each other to lock the knob.

Chris,
Do you mean a nut that is on the shifter, which is visible when you unscrew the shift knob? I've seen a 2000 w/ an adjusting nut on the shifter, under the knob, but my 2002 doesn't have one of those. When I unscrew my shift knob, there's nothing there, e.g., a nut, on the threads of the shift rod. Is my car missing something that it should have?
Thanks,
Gil

I'm wondering if yours was missed during assembly, if indeed an '02 has one. Is it possible for this locking nut to have gone all the way to the end of its thread and fallen down to the bottom of the stick? I'm not sure if this is possible. Just a thought. If you're not getting a Voodoo knob, perhaps someone near you who has a Voodoo and doesn't need the lock nut might give it to you. Or you could check to see if you could order one from your dealer.
Gil,
The nut that is missing (there should be one) is a lock nut that is tightend up against the gearshift knob to lock it into the correct location, so that the engraving on the knob is facing the correct direction.

I too have a 2002 S2000, and mine DID HAVE the lock nut. My lock nut, however, was already all the way down, so to adjust my shift knob, I had to unscrew the knob itself and bring the lock nut up a bit.
Gil,
One thing I forgot to mention. Check to make sure the lock nut isn't underneath the shift boot cover. The boot cover on my 2002 hides the entire lock nut so you can't see it at all when the shift knob is screwed on.

A lot of times, the dealers remove the shift knob if the car is going to sit in the showroom since people steal the knobs. If that happened to yours, then it's entirely possible that when they replaced the shifter they neglected to put the nut back on.
