Ive bought many things and didnt sign the title till later. As long as the previouse owner signs off on it you can leave the buyer section blank until you go to register it.

exactly...usually the seller signs the title and the buyer brings it to DMV to register it in his/her name.

Ought to do a bill of sale too while you're at it.

"I the undersigned have sold car such and such VIN #XXXX for the sum of $XXXX to joe smoe on Sept 20, 2006".

You both sign both copies and you keep your copy.

I wouldn't let you copy my license if I was the buyer. You have no right to ask for it. I wouldn't let you copy the title either. Once you sign it over, the deal's done.

This is exactly what you want to do. You need evidence that you sold the vehicle--otherwise, if he wrecks into someone else before he transfers the title into his name, you may be held liable for damages unless you can prove it was no longer yours.

Most states will not refund you the unused portion of your vehicle registration. NY residents are lucky in this respect. Different states use different license plate procedures. In some states, the plate stays with the vehicle--in others (most I think), the seller keeps the plate.

These procedures do vary widely from state to state.

<----works with motor vehicle division (not for them though )
