Default Singlehanded Hardtop Removal

So I live by myself with my dogs and cat, the weather has been beautiful and I've been really jealous of the Z4s, SLKs, SLs, etc. With that being said I had to take the top off, and couldn't wait to call a friend.

All you need is a pillow and some testicular fortitude.

Step 1: unlatch everything, unplug the window defroster, etc.
Step 2: Push the top up about and inch and put the pillow under the window
Step 3: Lift the top and tilt it back from the front, resting it on the pillow
Step 4: Rotate the top around on the pillow, grab the top frm the front and lift it off the pillow
Step 5: Set it down and done

I don't think you can use a similar strategy to get it back on.

I do the old "wear it like a hat method"

unlatch the top all around. get in the car, sit on the center console, grab the top at the left and right window openings and stand up with the tops weight on your head. exit the car CAREFULLY. when done with a mugen roof, you can claim you are darth vader also. True Story

^^^testicular fortitude.

I get the wife, grab a neighbor, or use a favor owed by a friend. It's a rather expensive investment to screw up by tripping, dropping, etc...

At the end of the day it just isn't worth losing over $2,000 cause you can't wait an hour or two to take this car for a drive. Get someone to help you.

I've done the "hardtop hat" dance quite a few times. It get's easier every time and i haven't had any (major) incidents yet (scratched my roll hoop with one of the pegs...oh noes).

Scariest time is the first time. Almost threw my $3k hardtop into the body of my $30k CR. Now I can manage it without too much hassle - but I ask for help when it's around.

My biggest issue is putting it down. I usually rest it on the stacks of tires in my garage.

I really need to build my hardtop hoist but as bad as I would be as a mechanic, I would be even worse as a carpenter.

there are plenty of threads that discuss the install and use of a simple hoist - do a search .. Here is one of them ...
