Default Ski/snowboard rack on the S2000?

Ok, I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for asking, but here goes anyway...

My S2000 is currently my only car, but I go snowboarding frequently. So, I usually end up borrowing cars from friends or family members to go snowboarding. But, lately, I've been only half-jokingly considering somehow fitting all of my equipment in my S2000 and taking it to the mountains. Doing so would require a ski/snowboard rack. Just out of curiosity, has anyone done something like this with the S2000? Either a rack that fits on the trunk, or (and I know this is a long shot) one that goes on the hardtop?

Before the potential intense flaming, let me make it clear that at this point, I'm just asking out of curiosity. I'm looking at picking up a second 4WD/AWD vehicle to take to the mountains, but am considering alternatives, even somewhat silly ones like a ski/snowboard rack on the S2000. And yes, I'm aware that I'll need a set of snow tires.

Thanks for any responses to what must be a hilarious question.

The best option I've seen are the racks that attach to the back of the trunk and hold skis/snowboards vertically. I haven't found any in stores, but I've seen them on the road.

#22Benny,

Haha, I just did a search for "S2000 ski rack" and "roadster ski rack", and it looks like there's actually a decent number of racks offered specifically for roadsters. Most of them are platform-specific, and so far, I've found a lot of luggage racks for the S2000, but none for skis and snowboards. There are more options available for other roadsters, like the Z3, MR-2, Boxster, etc. I'll keep looking...

efthimios,

Sadly, I've thought about that as well, and just for kicks, have tried it to see how the boards fit with the top down. My girlfriend's board fits, but unfortunately, mine is a bit too long. Someone ought to offer a Big & Tall hardtop that fits ski and snowboard equipment. That'd be one Hell of a niche market.

I did this once when it was 80 degrees here in the valley and 60 on the mountain. I drove up with the top down. It was hella fun and the scenery was beautiful. I had to wrap my board in a towel to keep the edges from scratching anything in the car.

I'd be carefull on any rack that fit on the back of the s that carried skis/snowboards. As light as the S is a big old misplaced snowboard could catch air the wrong way and skew your steering/driving. I'd look into some kind of Yakima rack that attached to your hardtop.

You can fit up to a 165 in the car with the top up. I took mine to the mountain in a board bag in the passenger seat. You have to put the top down to get the board in the car. Plus if you pull the passanger seat forward a bit and recline it, then the board fits just great.

Hey what's up Bo...wow, based on the responses here, I've gotta go check my board and car fitment again. I ride a 155, and it didn't seem to fit the last time I tried. But if your 159 fit, then my 155 should be fine. Have you taken your S2000 up to the mountains? I'm thinking about it, but am holding off for now 'cause my girlfriend might be getting a WRX soon...

As for setup, I've got a '02-'03 Burton Custom, Drake F60 bindings, and Northwave boots (the silver and black ones that everyone has). I fvcked up my board a bit riding over ice and rocks, though, so I'm looking at getting a second one for icy days and park riding.

You wanna head out to Tahoe sometime? PM me if you do, I head out almost every weekend. Only weekends I don't go are when I can't find anyone else to go, or when I've got stuff like homework to do. I have the Sierra/Northstar season pass, so I usually go to one or the other to save money. But, I'm open to anything...I'll go wherever people wanna go. So, just PM me man...oh yeah, I'm going to Kirkwood this coming Monday, December 22nd, so lemme know if you wanna hit that up.

Thanks a lot for the input, guys! I'm going to have to check my car again. My board is just a 155, so based on you guys' experiences, it should fit. I never thought of putting the board in with the top down, and *then* putting the top up...that'll probably make a big difference.

Thanks again...please keep the suggestions and comments coming!

I am so going up to Tahoe this weekend!!!!! I'm not an SUV fan, but when my wife wanted one the only thing I could think was....my ride into the mountains!!!!! It truly is perfect for that, heated seats are so nice after a long day shredding!
