There are muscle cars and then there are Cobras. Totally different worlds.

Anything with a 289 and Webers (could include Cobras, GT350's and GT40's)that is built correctly with a good driver will eat an S2000 for breakfast in a straight line. Now, if you even want to go into the realm of the 427 with Webers - just forget about it.

Let's also remember that the 289 Cobras enjoyed much more success on the track than the 427's.

This is a cobra replica that a guy here at work that I know just finished. The kit is from Superformance. It weighs in at around 2400lbs. He put an all aluminum 351 in that's bored and stroked to 393 cu inches. The engine puts out over 400HP and around 460 lb-ft of torque. He's got a 5-speed manual tranny in his. I wouldn't even consider trying to race this thing in a straight line.

period.
Not true!

Here again are the stock street 289 Cobra performance stats:

0-60 MPH: 5.7 Sec
0-100 MPH: 14.2 Sec
1/4 Mile: 14.0 Sec @ 99.5 MPH
Top Speed: 139 MPH

Remember, the majority of genuine street Shelby Cobras made were 289s (453 units) not 427s (260 units). Also the racing glory the Cobra earned was based on the 289 platform not the 427 platform.

So, in summary, is a "typical" genuine stock, street Shelby Cobra comparable in performance to a genuine stock, street Honda S2000?

YOU BETCHA!!!

P.S. You wouldn't believe the positive reactions I got from Shelby owners while I was driving my Red/Black S2000 at the Shelby American Automobile Club's National Convention at Lime Rock Park last year. More smiles and thumbs up than you can imagine. It was fantastic! More than one of them told me they thought the S2000 was the modern day 289 Shelby Cobra!!!

The 351 Cleveland motor didn't exist in 1956. Could you perhaps mean the 352 FE motor although I believe it wasn't introduced until 1958?

Meat,

Actually, I'd prefer to see a 351 Cleveland come in this package:

yes, a stock Cobra 289 offers similar performance numbers to the S2000. but let's be clear here... what percentage of Cobras on the street are stock 289s? i'm a Cobra fiend and I've only seen two in my life.

if you run into a Cobra on the street the odds are VERY high that it's a replica. and if it's a replica, then it's a replica of a 427 (probably doesn't actually have a 427 in it, but has more 'get up and go' than a 289). very few folks buy replicas of the 289 (regardless of the racing history of the car).

and THOSE cars (see the Superperformance above) will (in fact) eat us for breakfast.

and THIS Cobra (see the original post) had a 351 in it (a common motor for the lower end 427 replicas.

Sev... you're our resident expert. Would you be confident taking on a replica Cobra 427 with a 351 in it (and a competant driver)?

how can you possibly claim Shelby Replicas are all crap? Sure, there are many out there that aren't built very well...but there are more than enough extremely fine examples of very well built replicars. Dont be so ignorant! Please!

The original post said it had a 350 (GM) motor not a 351.

Yes, a built 351 (or 350 for that matter) Cobra replica would probably do-in the S2000.

However, there are so many cheap Cobra knock-offs out there you never know what's really under the hood. As I said before, it really depends!

But, if you're going to compare non-stock cars with non-stock cars then, with enough money, you can make any car beat any other car.

If you're a Cobra fiend and you've only seen two real ones in your life -- I urge you to attend an SAAC National Convention. You'll be in Cobra heaven!!! For more info, here's the link

Violation

Many/most of the Cobra replicas are crap. Most, to the untrained eye, look OK. But, if you know what you are looking at, the cars are not accurate in terms of build construction, drivetrain or even as far as dimensions.

Superformance is a reputable source of replicas, however, as I mentioned above if you are going to spend the money get a CSX and be done with it.

Yes the Pantera is great muscle/exotic. You have to love when they strip the trunk (engine compartment) and you just see the 351 sitting in there all alone.
