No it wasn't mine... but it coulda been. Me and my friend here at work both have S2k's, and park next to each other in one of the local hi rise parking lots here in Santa Monica. The locals may know where i'm talking about.. Well, I had a lunch appt. today so I parked at the lot closest to our office instead. Usually we have to park about a block and half away... Santa Monica BS politics. Monthly card holders(us) get the shaft in favor of in/out shoppers that make the city more money.
So I pull up to the eigth floor after my appt, and notice his top sliced right open! Damn Theives!!! He doesn't have one mod, and the funny thing is is that he didn't know of the secret compartment until I told him a few weeks ago.. That's where he keeps his semi-valuables, and it went unoticed and untouched.. Gotta love the secret compt!

We've had about 10 break ins in the past 3 yrs here in the local garages. We're actually thinking of moving the company bec. of it! Everything from car stereos to M3 wheels stolen right off the car!
So, unfortunately for him he needs a new top.. Fortunately for me I had a lunch appt...

He has an 01.. Can he replace his top with an 02 glass rear window?

that's too bad. i think ppl have posted that they could get the 02 top and the insurance company just makes them pay the difference. try a search? is the owner on this website?

anyway, after the last west la drive, we went to third street promenade for lunch and i forgot to lock my car!! left it there for a good hour and a half, came back and nothing had happened. whew!!

it's funny that you posted about S2K theft/vandalism on the westside, cuz it's one of the few places where i'm less vigilant about my car's safety - there's so many other nice cars around that mine stands out less. i'll take this as a warning.

The owner isn't on the board, though he'll cruise it once in a while.. He's a super cool guy, and it sucks that it had to happen to him... Well, nobody was hurt, his car didn't suffer any major damage, so all in all it could've been a lot worse.
None of the Promenade parking lots have security cameras. They don't even have Security! The only thing they have is a bicycle cop cruising through them once in a while. My boss had his M5 splr lip ripped off twice in 2 weeks! He decided to leave it off after the second incident.

Crime/Vandelism Sucks! The thief should be shot by a sniper on sight! That'd be a great deterent!

I just hope it doesn't happen again. But, after all, this is Los Angeles!
Does an alarm even help with an incident like this? How sensitive does it have to be to detect someone cutting the top?
Any Recondmendations?

Sorry to hear that about your friend. From what I've heard from another local member here, it will cost a lot more to replace the '01 top with the '02 one. Apparently the mechanism is different, so aside from getting a new top, you would have to get the mechanism too. Having an alarm will help to deter most casual thieves, but if someone is determined to get in your car, they will.

 

my car was hit at work ~ fashion island newport beach. The asshole hit the car and didn't leave a note or anything. Broken taillight, damaged quarter panel and cracked bumper. There were no cameras in the parking structure and my stupid insurance company didn't waive the deductable even though I had non-insured motorist coverage. Sucks for your friend, hopefully a honda dealer can replace it back to new.

 

I'm the other S2k owner that rstark is talking about who had his top slashed a couple of weeks ago. I've currently got black duct tape I bought from Lowe's holding the top together until it gets fixed (hopefully next week).
I also was hoping to get the glass rear window, but when I heard I would have to pay an extra $1200 out-of-pocket, I said forget it. The plastic window doesn't bother me that much.

This may be obvious, but I'll say it anyway: When applying the tape, open the top about half way to give the canvas some slack so you can tape it shut good.

Hope he gets it back to new soon. Thieves should all die!

 

i remember reading that MarkS2K's alarm is set up so if someone touches the convertible top or reaches into the cabin when the top's down, it will go off. there's ongoing debates about whether it's better to leave the top up or down, and whether an alarm really deters thieves or not, but i always think something is better than nothing.

Funny you should mention the debate about whether to leave the top up or down.. I was thinking about that after his top was slashed, and I was looking for a semi-safe-visible spot to park mine. I thought, maybe I should save the theif the hassle of slashing my top, and just leave the top down for the Pr*ck... Have at Nothing I Keep in my car! Crazy to think that way, but who knows?
This is the one thing I loved about my Slk... HARD TOP/Convertible!

I'm presently doing research on alarm systems. As much as I dislike them....
Sounds like Alpine or Viper... If anyone would like to chime in feel free. I know there's a ton of info on this site about them.. Started reading some of the posts last night...
