Default Soft Top Car Alarm

Does anyone have a car alarm that goes off if someone cuts through the soft top? Does such a thing even exist? I can't help but feeling that if I buy myself a convertible I'm bound to have some snotty kid rip through the thing with his pocket knife to steal something trivial like my parking card or similar. On the other hand, they might just do that even if the alarm goes off during the process.

Yes an alarm exists. it won't go off because someone "cut the top", but it will detect the movment withing the cockpit. The alarm sets up an RF field within the cockpit. When the RF field is broken it triggers the alarm. You can even leave the top down and if someone breaks the field with their arm, head, etc it triggers. It's been a while since I sold car alarms (about 8-9yrs) so I don't know which brand would have this feature or is a reliable one. Your local performance store should have something. Just ask for an RF Field or motion detector.

Viper makes an excellent proximity system for thier upper end alarms.

I use one on the Integra, and its awesome. I left the windows and sunroof open most of last summer... I plan on installing one into the S2000 within a week of purchase.

Viper alarms are made my DEI.

The above link shows a couple of examples of microwave proximity detectors.

I've got an Alpine 8063 alarm with a dual stage shock sensor and a dual stage radar sensor. This means that a warning can be setup for a certain level of shock or proximity (the warning is a few chirps) and the alarm will trigger if the second level of shock or proximity is violated. Both stages of both sensors are programmable. I have the radar sensor programmed so getting really close to the car will trigger a warning. The proximity warning simply flashes the LEDs (installed in the doors) for five seconds and will then chirp if the sensor is still being triggered after five seconds. If something moves inside the cockpit the alarm will sound. If something continually triggers the outer radar area the alarm with stop issuing warnings as it could be a tree blowing or something.

This alarm comes with a backlit LCD display module that allows easy programming and shows the time/date when it's not being programmed. It's not cheap but I felt it was worth it (just for the clock ).

There's one other member here with this alarm and we both have the display module installed in the stereo door. Mine is hidden so it's only visible when the door is down (so I can see the display and the stereo at the same time). His is installed on the outside of the stereo door.

I'll be posting pics soon of my stereo/alarm install.

(This post was longer than I intended - sorry.)

I have a COBRA alarm with what is known as a microwave sensor. It works by creating a mushroom shaped invisible field over the car. The sensitivity is easily adjusted to go off if anyone even comes near the car, but to avoid winding people up who are just passing the car it is better set to pick up on substantial objects breaking the field.

It is available on most alarms as it is just a sensor that connects into the management system. Leaving the Roof down on windy days with leaves and bags has not been a problem.

XLNT Choice. This alarm rocks. I have one ON MY MR2 and works great for days when the t-tops are off.

I have a HOFCO alarm with a single mode proximity sensor. It detects whenever someone sticks their hand inside the cockpit. I can actually set the sensitivity. At the S2K meets, the people that know that I have the sensor love to set it off. Since my car has airhorns, it sure wakes up te neighbors.
