Default Soft top rip on an 06' with 17k miles? What!

I seem to have the standard wear mark on the passenger side of my soft top that is typical of other users here. This looks to be an issue with the support bar wearing the top. The tear is about 1/4" long and I can see sunlight through it.

Will the Honda dealer replace the top? Is it totally up to each dealer on replacement or has Honda just figured that this is going to happen and they replace it with no questions asked?

I have taken immaculate care of the top (and car) with the right products and the car only has 17k miles on it.

Is there anything I should say/do to sway the dealer right off the bat to ensure that a new top is put on the car? I absolutely know this is due to the bad mechanism and not from someone cutting it or anything.

aren't you under the regular warranty still? this is a known issue and if you're still in a relatively new car, i'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to get them to do it...

Yes, still under warranty. I was reading through the forums and this will be my first experience with my local honda dealership in my area, so I wanted to be sure I was prepared with the right things to say/do to ensure this is taken care of.

I just noticed this yesterday (probably happened yesterday), so I will have to wait it out till Tuesday to ask them.

Take the car in with the assumption and the attitude that "of course" it will be fixed. The car is after all under warranty and you should not feel that you must come up with the right words to say in order to get your top replaced.
"I want the top replaced while it's still under warranty" (please). Please is optional.

I just found a similar tear on the passenger side of my 05 with 24,000 miles. It's overlying one of the supports and about 1 1/2 in long. I called American Honda to see if they had a bulletin on it. They don't. So I'll try the dealer this week. Meanwhile, black Duck tape on the inside and keep the top up (and the weather's great for top-down driving right now!). Not sure if the warranty will cover after three-plus years, even with relatively low miles.

Question...if I have to replace the top, is it better to replace it with factory-style vinyl, or a good quality canvas? Any input?

If you are past 3 yrs they probably won't warranty it unless you have a lot of service history with the dealer. Honda has obligation past 36mths/36K.

I took the car to the dealership today.

The dealer said that he had to call his district manager to see if they could replace it under warranty.

The first guy mentioned they hadn't sold a lot of s2000's and they hadn't seen this problem before.

The 2nd guy - the service advisor - Said he had sold "a lot" of s2000s and hadn't seen this. I printed out a lot of posts from S2ki and showed him. He seemed vaugely interested.

I asked them what to do because it would be raining soon, the guy said "put some tape over it". I said, I tried that, it wouldn't stick. He said, did you try electrical tape? I said, no.

He said, or, try duct tape, that will stick to anything.

Wow - a dealer is telling me this? I knew I had a bad feeling about this.
