It is definitely more about how fast you dump the clutch than what RPM, as far as spinning the clutch goes. I notice if I dump fast enough at lower RPM it just bogs down instead of spinning the clutch. Locking up the clutch requires a much faster dump, even at lower RPM, than I'm used to using.

I agree it is damned peculiar how "slippy" the clutch is compared to the dozens (maybe even scores?) of other cars I've driven.

I don't think the clutch is weak on the S2000. I think the lack of torque becomes much more evident on drop clutches. Remember max torque is at 7,500rpm. On other Hondas, it's around 4k.

The problem is a combination of a few things. Mainly the lack of low end grunt to get the tires spinning combined with alot of grip in the rear end by the s02s and a heavy back end in RWD standards since 51% of the weight is on the rear. And of course the clutch is not a strong one either, i think Honda put it there to act as a fuse and absorb the shocks of the drivetrain. However this has caused the need to dump the clutch even higher, if the s2k clutch was a good one, we could have easily used a techniqe like partly riding the clutch for good take-offs which would have been much better for the drivetrain.

If you got the TSB done, then there is an inherent problem. However, if you have not gotten it done yet, that is a tell-tale sign of the weak, underengineered clutch/pressure plate assembly. My car did that twice (I never did a 7k drop, just about 4), and I knew I had a problem.

But then voila! Got the TSB done, and the clutch was perfect. 2k clutch drops resulted in spinning the tires until they got traction, and then the motor bogged, what should happed with a car with a powerband like this. I don't know about "shocking the system" especially if the clutch can't hold at 4k rpms, it definately ain't gonna hold at 8k.

But everyone has a theory.

Did I mention that I can spin my tires when I do a clutch drop at 2K on the M Coupe? Yep... all the way to redline, something I would have never, EVER even attempted to do when I had my S2000. Point? There is none. But it is cool as hell to not have to worry about things like this anymore.

Good luck, and get it checked out. There IS something wrong. Low torque or not, a clutch should hold.

This happened to me today as well for the first time. I was out trying to get better at getting "off the line". I revved to about 5K and dropped the clutch and floored it. Next thing I know I'm at 7.5K and doing about 5MPH and the smell is terrible.

Everything seems ok right now. I figured I took a little life off the clutch but all is ok.

But I do have to figure this out before I have no clutch left. I'll try popping at 6.5K to 7K to see what that does. This seems a little rough on the car so I wouldn't want to do it much.

Also, a clutch drop at 2K will bark the tires but in almost every case the car bogs immediately after that and then quickly picks back up. Not exactly the best way to get down the line in a hurry.

I had spun my clutch a couple of times when I first got my stook. Then, last week prior to getting TSB-054 done and mounting new tires, I figured it was time to see if it was the clutch or me.

I pulled four consecutive 4-6K clutch drops, making sure I side-stepped the drop rather than pulling my foot off.

The rear end broke loose each time and the tires spun up to redline.

Don't know if this means the clutch didn't spin because my technique was better this time or because the tires had less rubber, or both, but it definitely seemed like the technique helped. Even thought the tires were worn down, I would think they would have been hot enough to grip by the second or third burnout, thus causing the clutch to slip.

ATGS2K,

I don't think it was just you. I have had my car since Nov 1999 and recently tried a few spin outs myself. When I first got the car, I could not break loose the rear to save my life now it is easy.

I think that with the increased life on the engine it is simply putting out its full power now so it spins much more easily.

Just did the same thing and the clutch just slipped. Same stinking smell too. Honda should've put the fix for the clutch TSB for 2001 S2K right?

I can spin my Rs wheels at 3K... it was strange that I couldn't do that with my stook.
