You were changing the balance of the car, you might have not turned smoothly - I see lots of people turn too much initially, then have to turn severely at the end of the turn. Most intersections, you should actually roll straight about 15 feet to make a nice, even arc, but most people begin turning immediately, creating a pinched arc at the end of the turn. Add the smallest bit of grit on the road, or oils, maybe cold tires, any number of innocent variables, and you can lose traction.

Bottom line, even at 20 mph, the increased rotational speed of the rear coming around, plus the fact that the wheel isn't designed to hit a curb at any speed, will cause significant damage. You're talking about swinging 3000 lbs into an unmovable object - even 20mph will make an impact. It sucks that it happened - hopefully the car isn't totaled.

Btw, post pics of your own car so we can see.

I feel like I have explained everything correctly, obviously there is no need for me to lie about this situation to a group of people I never see. If that was the case, why even bring up this accident in the first place.

There is one more thing though, the other day I was slowly going up my driveway, at an angle, and heard some sort of a pop/crackle ( I don't know how to explain it). It was late at night and I couldnt see anything wrong in the dark. This was a few days ago and I sort of forgot about it till this morning.

Could something have been broken before this accident?

PS - The car pictured is not mine, I don't have photos yet. I found this picture and it looked similar to my incident. Although mine looks worse.

If your suspension was broken before, it will of course hurt your handling. If your right shock is "dead", you're bouncing off the ground, so you could easily lose control.

well the shock was definitely bouncing. I was driving my friend around the other day and he even mentioned to me that he could feel the shock bouncing on that side. Too bad the shocks were going to be replaced next week. arg.

We're not saying you're lying. Just that you may have done something you didn't realize you were doing. If you look at bad golfers, they have surprisingly little insight into why they can't hit the ball. kind of like that.

Having something possibly loose or broken before the turn could definitly explain it, just wonder what it was that you couldn't feel it before getting to the turn.

Sorry to hear about you car though. When we were at the Fall meet in Vancouver a guy spun his car in Stanley Park and wasn't going all that fast. Hairpin curve though. From what I understand most spin outs are caused by either an increase in speed or decrease (braking or accelerating and you really have to watch shifting as has bee pointed out).

The only thing that could have caused you to spin in the DRY and hit a curb like that is if you hit oil or some other slippery substance. But honestly 3.5k in first gear isn't even 20mph. Really the only scenario I can imagine you spinning at that speed is if you gave it sudden gas + some unknown substance on the road.

My question is why didn't you recover? At such low speeds even if you start to oversteer it should be very easy to recover.

Honestly I don't know why I couldnt recover. It was so sudden and I wasnt prepared for this to happen, at first I didnt know what was going on. The street was on a pretty large slant and by the time I realized what was going on it was too late.

That really sucks man, it can happen very fast especially when you are not ready for it. I had tons of seat time in my old car (k20/em2) and really prided myself on great car control. I spun it a couple of times at autox events, never on the track, everytime I could feel it coming. The car would get to far out of shape and before I knew it I was throwing both feet in and going around . One time though it had rained the night before, most of the course was perfectly dry, except for one area where water was seeping from cracks in the asphalt. I was not aware of the water, and on my 1st run with cold race tires I hit it with my backend a bit light, and just starting to turn in. My god did I go around fast . So yeah it can happen quick and even those who really know there car cannot do anything some times.
