Default Staying in VTEC after 1st - 2nd shift

The wife and I test drove an s2k for the first time tonight. I think it was great. We're looking to get a used one, and something that crossed my mind AFTER I got done with the testdrive. I drove a Celica GT-S with the variable lift and it would hit the higher-lift cams at around 6,000 RPM and rev to the 8,000 RPM redline. However, after shifting to second, the RPMs would drop down to around 5,500 RPM or so, and there would be an annoying lag before the lift kicked in again. Does this S2k do this, or does it stay in VTEC after the shift? Also, does this vary by model year since the newer cars have a lower redline than the earlier ones?

I apologize if this is a repost, but, searching didn't seem to work at all really.

if you redline say in 1st you'll stay in vtec when you shift to 2nd and redline 2nd you'll stay in vtec in 3rd and so on.doesn't matter what model year, it's all the same.

peace

if you shift fast enough, yes. vtec at 6k, redline at 9k. plenty of time to shift on the cam.

you can stay in lift with the celica GTS, it just takes a lot of practice.it requires you to slip the clutch really fast, you can't just dump the clutch, or else it will bog the rpms. i have a celica GTS with redline at 7,800(stupid 02s come with lower limiter) and i can still stay in lift. lift kicks in at 6,200. but the s2000 is so much easier...

it seems to me that if you dont shift RIGHT on the fuel cut it drops out. maybe its cuz im shifting a little bit slower so i dont burn the clutch up with the cdv, but im thinking about getting a vafc and dropping the engagement point 100rpm so it doesnt have to be absolutely perfect.

GTS requires abuse to stay in VTEC, the S just enjoys it. The 2004+ US models come with the 2.2 l engine

no its quite easy really....just rev it to 9k, when you see the limiter blink quickly shift to 2nd , ill garantee that you will be past the vtec point at this time
it might seem a bit hard but after 4 or 5 redlines youll get it, and you wont think about it again
good luck

On newer S2000s with the 2.2 liter engine and 8000rpm redline, yes, the rpms will drop below the VTEC transition point during the 1->2 shift. Unless you slip the clutch deliberately. After driving a 9000rpm redline S2000, I found this behaviour very annoying.

You can use this gear calculator to graph the shift points, and you'll see it yourself. http://www.turnzero.com/technical_resource...gear_calculator
