If it's not certified, then it's just USED!

Holy crap the sense of ENTITLEMENT that's floating around!! It was a USED CAR!!! He bought it and should have looked at the tires in the first damn place. In my experience in this car rear tires w/ 5/32" should be replaced and he should have either worked that out during the deal or planned to have them replaced himself immediately after taking possession.

IMHO I think they are doing you DAMN RIGHT, and you should be praising the hell out of them.

Sorry rant over....if your fronts are ok then go for the S02's but yes make sure they are S2k spec. if not get 245/45/16's. You will find the rears wear out roughly twice as fast as the fronts.

If I'm not mistaken, the Honda S02s are "W" rated the Boxster S02s are "Z" rated. I think the tires are shaped a little different

The rear OEM Honda S02s are 225, not 245.

If you choose an AFTERMARKET, you'll need to go with a 245 to get the same contact patch as the S02 since it is a very square tire.

Either way, they are taking good care of you there.

Cbeyond, I doubt that they sold him the car with 2/32 of tread. He has been sliding out the back end for a couple of weeks and we all know how quickly the rubber will disappear doing that!

The dealership should replace the tires.

Not looking at the tires in the first place is his fault.

He's lucky the dealership didn't say "Nah... You weared them down and now you want us to pay?"

Honda's Certified Used Car system is one of the most stringent out there. The amount of loss a dealership can take for selling one certified car with simply an old wiper blade is substantial - typically it is a loss of DMA money for a period of up to one year (equals about $30,000 a month for a dealership that sells roughly 100 new Hondas each month) - it would not be worth it to the Honda Dealer to try to cut one corner on 2 tires - even tires as expensive as S0-2's.

Somebody made a very good point when catching that this person stated he has had the car 3 weeks and is slipping around - yes, S0-2's wear fast! I think the dealership has done their job and should not be criticized as a "stealership" for it. Too many people are too quick to nail a dealer as being a rip-off........dealerships (especially new car dealers) are one of the most "under the microscope" businesses out there. Not to say that dealers did not earn this back in the sleezy 80's, but I think you'll find today that the vast majority are totally legit and honest.

On another note - as the S2000 becomes more affordable on the preowned market we are going to have less experienced buyers purchasing them. Don't jump on them because they may have made a mistake during that purchase. I have yet to see a new Mid-A member buy a used car right under the age of 21 without help from a parent or fellow S2000 Owner.

I have not been tearing up the tires at all... in fact when i took it to the dealership they checked the certification records and said that the tires should have been replaced before i bought the car infact the first time i did a squeal the tires was after they told me i was gonna get new ones. I am not gonna do something to the car and then blame it on the dealership. I opted for the 4 new tires and i was glad that i did. the front tires were bald on the inside on both sides. They couldnt put 245's on the rear as they are not the oem specs. so i got 4 new toyo proxes 4 put on. They will do just fine till i can get some better ones later. I do miss the look of the s0-2's width and V tread pattern. I will probably slap some toyo proxes ts-1's on after these wear out. I dont race with car and i dont plan to.

You should have said that earlier. Because I am a dealer (and was raised at a dealership) I am a bit touchy when it comes to dealers getting bad mouthed. Maybe I was a little too harsh on my earlier response.

a little too harsh

just a tad...plain and simple, certified used means the tires are in respectable condition. I just went through this at a toyota dealer in looking for a winter car. the dealer should replace any tire on that car that's less than certified spec. end of story.
