A little background first.

I had conflicting objectives of putting in really excellent sound, but without emptying the piggy bank. I initially decided to focus just on speakers, and leave the stock head unit in place. I figured that if I picked really efficient speakers, I wouldn

What store in Ann Arbor carries the Focals? The only good car stereo store I was of aware of here, Future Sound, closed many years ago.

Howard,

How did you hold the tweeters? I am considering doing the same with mine but I haven't figured out how to fix and hold the tweeters.

Do you thing the "grille" on the a-pillars is doable by a non-professional?

I'm not sure, since I didn't do it. I'm guessing that he built a small harness using 1 cm-wide strapping, and screwed that to the base of the windshield. I am sure that any qualified stereo installer would know the best ways of doing it.

Yes and no. Drilling the holes in the correct pattern is not hard, once you have the centres marked; however I haven't the foggiest how Chris chamfered the holes (put rounded edges on each hole - look at the holes in the door for the speaker, you'll understand what I mean).

GR-8,

I have been waiting a year to improve sound and I appreciate your efforts.

A local shop, sound in motion carries the focals and likes them quite a bit. They recommended putting the tweeters in a small carrier they fabricate. Thus the two components install like a coaxial speaker.

They believe some sound deadening in the doors would be a good plan.

They are also intent on changing the head unit and recommend an "eclipse" unit. Then add a wireless controller to link to the dash controls.

Any thoughts?

OT I was in Toronto last month and saw no S2000s. I did see a terrific Aston Marton on Bloor West (silver with blue top) and tons of boxsters.

Any chance you could e-mail that Visio file for the hex layout. I'll be doing mine when it arrives. Thanks in advance if you have it.

You yourself a favour, don't mount the tweeter coaxially. They fire in the wrong direction, they're blocked by your leg (a big problem for me - I'm 6' 2", and my left leg rests against the door all the time). Get them up higher, either in the door panel, surface-mounted to the "A" frame or embedded at the base of the "A" frame firing up and in, where they reflect off the glass (my pick).

They believe some sound deadening in the doors would be a good plan.
If the plan is to keep out outside noise, your money is probably better spent installing the roof liner, then put in Ziebart SoundGard undercoating. If the thought is to simmer down the 6.5", I'd say put in the speakers first and see how you like it; to my taste, they they work great without any deadening.

They are also intent on changing the head unit and recommend an "eclipse" unit. Then add a wireless controller to link to the dash controls.
This is your choice, not theirs. IMHO, 95% of your benefit will come from the speakers and amp. Perhaps you could do that first, and see whether you're happy or not.

Only 500 Stooks/year to Canada, maybe 30-40 come to Toronto. Compare that with 2000-2500 Boxsters/year for the past 3 years. Stooks are exclusive cars, man!
Drop us a line the next time you're coming to town.
