Default Strange: Delayed Trunk Ka-Chunk!

I'll close the trunk, then 10-30 seconds later the trunk talks back to me like it's latching again.

Anybody else notice this?

If so, has anybody given their 5-year old kid a flashlight and put him in the trunk to find out what moves?

Thats funny - I havent thought about mine for a while but mine definitely did that when it was new. I don't recall when it stopped; I had forgotten all about it until I read your post... Your description is dead-on about it - really strange how long the delay is.

Mine does that too. I'm guessing it's a delayed locking mechanism but I don't know why that would be necessary.

Here's a pure guess...

it could be the trunk springs. they're located inside the trunk towards the top and back. they look almost like an "x" and criss cross one another.

when i got my 2002, the "uprated" springs (necessary with the rear spoiler) weren't installed correctly. as such, they rubbed eachother the wrong way (i know, i know.. go ahead with the jokes) and would make a popping sound when the trunk was opening or closing. the sound was delayed from the actual release of the locking mechanism.

worth a look.

my car does the same ....its the trunk bars that keep the trunk lid up when its open, they just bind up and unbind later.

That must be it.

The harder I slam it, the longer it takes to talk back it seems!

they are called torsion bars and can be removed, but you need a torsion bar tool...
i wonder if they were installed backwards-
page 20-76 in the service manual.
(maybe ask your dealer to look at them)

My model year 01 thunks a few seconds after closing as well. I assumed that since I usually open it with the remote, that I was hearing something like a servo or an electronic switch resetting. My perception is that the remote doesn't work as well or at all during the time before the final "ker-chunk".
