OK, I have pondered this question many times before and I figured I put it here to see what you inteligent folks think...
Is there any difference in performance/effectivity in having the caliper mounted on the front side of the rotors vs. the rear of them??? Probably not but I wanted to get more opinions on this.
I'm sure packaging will be a reason for some vehicle why it is on which specific place but I have always wondered if there is a "best" place for the caliper location...
I don't know why they are located as they are but it certainly makes it easier to run cooling duct work to the front rotors. Maybe the folks at Honda had this in mind when they designed the brakes.
The real interesting thing is on formula one cars the mount them at the bottom of the rotor facing up. This is to keep the center of gravity lower, but I would imagine it makes them harder to run cooling ducts to. It seems like a brilliant idea, making the unsprung weight have a better center of gravity. Any thoughts?
