Supersprint exhaust failure
This will be my first post in years. Yesterday I had to put the OEM exhaust back on my '01 S2000 after 3 out of the 4 hangers broke off the stainless supersprint exhaust. The whole thing was about to fall off. The cause of the failure is unknown - metal hangers were broken in two as if by impact although none occurred. I had two mechanics look at it and neither could offer an explanation. The suspension and everything else is unmodified. It does not show any signs of abuse or ever having bottomed out (plus I would probably know).
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I called HMS motorsports where I purchased the system 3 years ago and got a big shrug. It's a mystery.
I must say the stock exhaust is much nicer on the highway but I miss the supersprint around town - it's so quiet I even hit the rev limiter today.

Any muffler shop (Midas) shied away from repairing it. They just said replace it. I said "this is a $1400 exhaust system!" They said basically we can't do it. A local garage said the same thing. Welding stainless steal is not trivial. And I still would like to know what caused the hangers to break in the first place.

I used to be a stainless steel welder in my youth
It is unlikely they all of a sudden gave out but if you didn't have some kind of impact then it is a mystery, Either way it can be fixed - If the muffler shops won't fix it and I don't understand why they wouldn't you can find a local sheet metal Fabrication shop that offers Tig welding and thay can patch it up for you!

Like nzaizar said go to a welding shop. Most muffler shops do not offer tig welding. If the shop doesn't offer tig, carry it someplace else. Mig and stick welds will melt the thin piping very quickly and do more damage than you have now.
My close friend's supersprint exhaust in his Audi got all rusted and started to leak after about 3 years of driving in upstate NY.
So he had to switch back to stock.
Makes me wonder..if they use low quaility stainless steel...

Hrm, I got my SuperSprint exhaust used with about maybe 15k miles on it, and it was in an accident (on the original car, not mine)... but so far the exhaust looks like its holding up just fine. Will have to keep a close eye on it.

Thanks for the advice. In 2 out of 3 cases the break in the hanger was right at the bend where it is welded to the exhaust. Something must have weakened the metal (is it possible to overheat the metal while welding?) I still have no idea. The exhaust is otherwise still in great shape so I may try to get it fixed. But I'm really enjoying the sound of a aftermarket stereo (that took me 2+ days to install) which is making me think twice about re-intalling the supersprint anyway.
