Default Suspension ????

I was putting the s2k under wraps for the winter and decided to look underneath. Having worked on cars for 15 years, I came across something I actually do not recognize on the rear shock/spring assembly. If you are looking at it from the rear of the car, it will be on the back side of the shock. It looks like a cylinder about 5" to 6" tall with a nut on top. Does this car use remote oil cylinders on the rear? Can some one provide some info on this please.

Additionally, when I looked at the front springs, It looks like some a*% at the factory sprayed undercoat all over the front shocks/springs. This is going to be a pain to remove in the spring.

I thought this was gonna be another "I found my spring spacers at 15k miles, my dealerships sucks" thread. Glad to hear it isn't
