Today was a big lube day for my S. 20k on the odometer, time for some flushing. I changed all drivetrain fluids. I changed my diff, tranny, and oil. I've been running redline 10W30 in my engine since 10k miles changing it every 3k miles, but this is the first time to change my diff and tranny. I used the Redline MTF for the tranny and Redline 75W80 hypoid gear oil for the diff. It was quite a chore. It wasn't hard at all to drain the tranny or diff, but to refill it, talk about a pain! I had a pump that could only hold a half quart at a time so I had to refill it too many times.

The Diff fluid smells TERRIBLE. Because of the sulfur in it to help on the friction modifier, it makes the fluid smell like 5 month old bad eggs. I could barely breathe, and everyone in the shop was gagging. It was the worst thing i have ever smelled!! How in the world could they make something smell that bad.

Besides, that it was a normal oil change. I pulled my denso iridiums out and made sure the tips were ok and they were healthy looking. Everything looked great. Reinstalled and closed up the top of the spark cover.

The redline MTF makes a huge diff in the feel of the tranny. I put about 50 miles on the car after the change, and it is still getting smoother. The tranny feels great now. The best way to describe the feeling is like the shifts feel like everything is all coated in vasoline. It is very very slick. Why did I not do this a long time ago is beyond me!

Next weekend's project is a valve adjustment. My S is 1 year old this month, and there isn't a single thing in the about this car that I don't like. This is by far the best car I have ever owned.

Thanks Honda!!!

I too am thinking of switching to Redline and doing the same three items. Thanks for the warning about the odor. According to my numbers the trans takes 1.6 qt and the diff .78 qt. So I'm puzzled why that would be so difficult even with .5 qt pump?

Diff and tranny fluid smell horrible just don't get any on your clothes, if you do just toss them out they will smell for weeks. Your pump problem can be fixed by using one of those cheap brake pumps, you can reverse the flow and fill indefinitly from a large container.

For reference purposes, what cars have you owned in the past? Thanks.

I use a long funnel ( for automatic fwd cars ) and about 3 1/2 ft. of clear vinyl tubing that fits over the end of the funnel. Put the car on 4 jack stands so that it is [ul]level[/ul], put a pan underneath the fill hole. Then route the tube from the drivers front to the side of the tranny. I use some wire and the floor jack handle to hold the funnel for the differental. Pour slowly, when it is full, the oil drips out the side into the pan.

I've been using Red Line products for about 4,000 miles now.

I had bad experience with redline in the tranny...after time it wore down quicker than honda fluid and caused more notchiness and trouble (esp at the track). For the diff redline is okay...swepco is much better.

and 20k is WAY too infrequent to be changing those fluids, especially the diff!!!!! Waiting so long, you're just looking for trouble.
