Removed the stock ss canisters from my Tanabe Racing Medalion and replaced them with dual SUS-304 HKSA carbon fiber Fireballs. The silencers stayed off.
The exit tip differs slightly from the Tanabe's (slanted as opposed to straight cut) though they're both 4-inches. It took a bit of customizing to get these to fit since they were a bit longer than the Medalions but strangely enough, the wrapped carbon fiber canisters came in 1.5-lbs lighter per muffler. It looks great and goes well with the gunmetal wheels and rear fascia section that is black. The car sounds a bit lower in
tone than before (IOW, meaner) so all in all, I'm quite pleased with this asthetic mod. When the cf hood comes in, that should add a bit more symmetry to the car.
Sold. The Tanabe is aggressively styled and db-levels likewise but to date, I have seen no other system (dual) with as good dyno results. In my case, 9.2 peak horsepower. The carbon fiber mufflers sit out equal to the original Tanabe canisters as seen here. The Tanabe can be considered an exhaust system for those who'd prefer to fly an F-16 over the stealth bomber.
Originally posted by turbo_pwr Just my opinion of course but not very asthetically pleasing with it sticking out so far.
Dan, remember that DarkCrow had those on his? I kept bugging him and called it "perky nipples" (they do look like perky nipples ) - he finally had it re-welded and now it tucks in real nice,
Russ: it looks good man, just wish that was tucked in a little more
First off take a look at darkcrows car he has modified his tanabe exhaust to sit inside the car and straightened it out a little bit.
Now on to my question, can I purchase these cans and have them fitted to the stock piping or is there not enough room. My cars in the ship right now and I can't go out and measure. I really just want the sound as I don't believe any exhaust dual or single has proven to gain hp. Thanks in advance.
Mine have been sold but I would imagine you can buy (as I did) canister-style mufflers to replace the OEM's which might give you the sound (but probably not the same horsepower results which have, incidently, at least in my case, been proven to average 4-5hp across the board). I don't like the cans tucked in too much because the carbon fiber is less visible so when all is said and done, I'm quite happy with the result. Exhaust systems aren't much different than any other mod for the car (especially wings/hoods/kits)...IOW, one man's Tanabe is another's not wanna be. I might go Titanium next year though, depending on how this system looks 12 months from now.
I hade the same type of CF muffler on my last car, a ITR -98 and at 100 km/h it was impossible to have a conversation inside the car, it was soo loud inside!! But the mufler made a nice sound when listening from the side of the road.
