Default Teach me about Final Drive Gears....

I want to have my S accelerate faster. I've been reading about 4.57 and how they are the best choice. So far I know that you get better 1/4 mile times.....thats it

Whats the cost on them? What brand should I look at? SHould I replace nething else? How much is installation usually?

Thanks a lot

4.57 is a richmond gear that is exclusively available through ricks2k (and I think hartdtopguy through some kind of partnership).

Installation will run around $500, but this is NOT a job I would entrust to a dealer or just any mechanic...and this is NEVER one I would allow a ricer speed shop to do, either.

fortunately, you can order installation for about $350 from the experienced installer that works for ricks. They ship you a pumpkin (the diff case) and you have that swapped out...that's an easy job.

In addition, I would look into the Comptech enhanced differential case, which also happens to be available from rick or hardtopguy. This strenthens the weak part of the diff, the bearing caps.

so the gears are around $560 I think I read. Then installation is another $350, and the rest is prolly something I can do myself you say? I have a lift at work and a "mechanic" that would help me put it in as long as its something we can do.

No, with the comptech housing and speedo calibration the price comes out to be ~2600 dollars. When you send your diff back you get credited 1000 dollars which makes the final proce ~1600 installed with the gears and the comptech.

Without the comptech and the core charge back it comes to be ~1000

I also heard having Rick's yelow box helps with this setup too.

You'll need eithor a yellow box from ricks or a yellow jacket from modify. Both will fix your speedo due to the gears.

torque at the wheels, multiply torque at flywheel times final gear ratio.

Gears give you 10-12% if I recall.
