Hey Prolene,

Just wanted to thank you again for helping me change the tranny fluid and adjust the clutch.

I changed out the tranny fluid to GM synchromesh and what a HUGE difference. My tranny was getting really notchy, but now with the synchromesh, it's smoother than when I first got the car. I can shift so much faster now and I don't even worry about the 2nd gear grind. I used to get a slight kickback when going into 3rd gear, and that's gone now. This stuff is great.

So once again, thanks Prolene for helping me switch out the fluid and for recommending synchromesh. Thanks for the washer too. Gotta love Honda parts for not knowing which washers to give me.

Enjoy that new fluid. You'll have to keep changing it every 3K~5K miles to keep it shifting smooth. I ran GM Synchromesh for 4500 miles, but after 3000 miles, it started to grind again. I just changed to fresh GM Synchromesh yesterday, and it's all good again.

marks2k- i just got the report in the office about how smooth your tranny is...
prolene is a great guy- he helped me with my console cover install, as you know.
how hard is the process?
put the car on jack stands, drain the fluid and pour in the synchromesh??? is that it? how long did it take?

Hey wanabe,

Yes, it's a pretty easy process. It took around 30 minutes, but I'm sure I can do it much faster now. You put the car on jackstands and you have to be sure the car is level. Open up the drain bolt, let it drain, put the drain bolt back in, open up the fill bolt (this was really hard to get off), use this special fill tube that Prolene made, and pour in the synchromesh. You'll probably have to buy a tool to let you fill up your tranny fluid. Prolene made one from some surgical supplies he had laying around. Make sure you have a torque wrench to screw everything back on according to spec.

He helped me adjust the clutch too, since my gears were sticking. Everytime I would try to put the car into neutral, the gears seemed like they were stuck, before coming out. The clutch adjustment helped a lot with that.

good to hear that the new fluid is working well. I've switched also and the initial review is that it is smoother.

I've posted this question up in most of the other GM Synchromest threads but I'll ask again until someone gives a good answer.

How well compared to the Honda MTF will the GM Synchromesh protect in terms of wear???

My 02 grinds second gear on the upshift like crazy too. I've taken it into my dealer and have pretty much been told to rev match and just drive it till it fails. I believe my TOB is causing my clutch to drag and not release since sometimes, I have to really yank it out of 1st gear hard. My TOB also rattles a lot, but oh well, my dealer said to just drive it till it fails and i'm doing precisely that. The funny thing, is that my car grinds 2nd gear on the upshift only when i'm shifting at low rpms..........if I shift at speeds above 6000rpms, it will shift into 2nd like butter and won't grind at all. It also seems like the slower I shift, the better chance of it grinding. 3rd gear on the other hand is so smooth it's unbelievable and I feel 2nd gear should be like that.

You can buy GM Synchromesh in a Pennzoil bottle ("Pennzoil Synchromesh") from Autozone for $5 per bottle. It even refers to the GM Synchromesh Part Number on the label.
