thinking of naming my S after Mitsuko Uchida
thinking of naming my S after Mitsuko Uchida, http://detnews.com/1999/entertainment/0507...hida/uchida.htm famous Japanese pianist. I love piano, love Mozart, love her playing, so why not make the connection with another realm of excellence.
Silly questiko do the Japanese call themselves by their Christian names first or last as written?
Or their Buddhist names or Shinto or whatever? Might like to call her Mitsuko (mitzy sounds a bit too hollywood flash) but is that the family name or the person

That is not a silly question. Many Asian cultures use their last names (at least from a Western perspective) first and vice versa. The Japanese do not. By Western standards, the Japanese use their first name then last.
Having said that, please keep in mind that it is very usual to only refer to another person by their last name in Japan. At that time, of course, you would utilize the appropriate nomenclature (- san, - sama, - sensei, etc.) at the end of their name depending on a multitude of factors (their social rank, your social rank, etc.)
Hope that helps.
