Those fake "air vents" in the sides of the front bumper.
Does anybody know, or have a theory, as to why these were designed into the front bumper? Best I can tell, the serve no purpose, except to a a bit of drag, which is bad. Other than this, the car's styling is notably free of fake things, like hood bulges, fake air scoops, and other styling items that serve no purpose. In that respect, these fake front scoops "stand out like a sore thumb" to me. Why the heck are those things there?
Thanks,
Richard

Could they be possibly used as mounts for driving lights in Europe or Japan (with a different insert)? Seem to have the ubiquitous shape for it... They also do add aesthetically to the front, which might otherwise be a little plain.
There are some "kits" to open them up, but all they do is then allow air into the wheel wells, which may not be a good thing aerodynamically. Some people have routed ducts from them to the intake also giving a pseudo ram air intake, positive pressure at speed. Again though, this low position make debris and water injestion a potential problem.
The fake nature of them does bother me a bit too, but not enough to do anything about it. If you want a fake excuse for their presence though, you could say they're "vortex traps to reduce front end lift" or "integral thermal black bodies to retain tire heat."

Take a look at the front of the '03 Accord 4-door, then look at the '03 Accord 2-door. To me the 4-door has way too much plastic in the front bumper and looks a a little to conservative and it has one opening. The 2-door has the 2 small "air vents" and in my mind it looks so much better! I suspect the S2000 needed this detail so it did not look too plain.
Check search function for "fog lights." I believe it's the Odyssey's lights that fit perfectly. It takes some effort to make the mod, but all the directions with pictures can be found here. Otherwise, I feel the same as you, why the fake stuff?
