The purpose is to make only a very small opening into chamber 2. Why chamber 1 is relatively large could be for a number of reasons. It may make it quieter, it may provide a little air storage, or it may just be easier to manufacturer it like that.

Air storage, haha, in case you run out of air?

Sorry, that was funny.

The air box is designed for sound. The extra volume on the left and right sides of the main chamber is just to tune the sound, and the thick plastic muffles the intake noise.

Sort of the same concept as the J's or ASM intake with the big bulbous piece in the middle. I've heard claims of throttle response but who knows.

Compare the HP for each intake...and you will find the Stock is either best or within statistical error. Unless you are an engineer, why f with it?

I'm going to refrain from posting my response about "air storage".

And where is this 3rd chamber you speak of?

I assume the 3rd chamber hes referring to is the resonator? And yes I do agree oem is best, thats why im not just buying a 300 intake. Instead I was just wondering ways to improve, or moreso the idea of gutting the airbox to improve it.

The intake box is actually 2 chambers. Air is sucked through chamber 1, then goes over a small hole into chamber 2, where the filter is. By "putting some weather stripping or some sort of rubber on top of the divider to make a complete seal" you would effectively be sealing off chamber 2 from chamber 1, preventing air from reaching the engine.
Have you actually seen the inside of an airbox? Air is being directly guided to the 2nd chamber, where the filter sits, by a tunnel.

As for gutting/modifying the stock airbox. Here is an example

I would put some weather stripping around the airbox where is seals it.

I think overtime, that spongy stuff lose sealing effectiveness.

that and near where the pipe goes into the box.
