With all the controversy surrounding how to make sure that you have the OEM S-02's, I thought I would post these pictures. According the the thread my new Potenza's, I had a set of slightly used S-02's shipped to me from someone who replaced their tires with snow tires...

Here are the pics, not the greatest, but they all have a tape measure across them so you can judge the tread patterns...

If you have any questions...ASK!

Hey greg, I have a question...

Even though shorting against the box has no tax benefits anymore, would you recommend utilizing that strategy or just buying puts, assuming that the underlying stock is going to go down in value? I mean, shorting is a good way to lock in a profit, but the puts would allow you achieve a little more, 'eh?

Or question #2...

So what is the measurement of the stock SO2s compared to the PPs? I am at home on my laptop, and I can't really see the millimeter measurements. Are they closer to a 245? And is there any way to measure them against a 225 PP?

Thanks

LDOGDOTCOM,

Selling puts are alot les capital intensive. More bang for the buck.

Ldogdotcom, hmmm, I have no answer for your first question! I have never bought puts or options or anything, so I'm not qualified to answer that...I am however, going to take an introduction course from Wade Cook in early January...any impressions on him? I'm a more conventional investor, a buy low, sell high kind of guy here...and one that has taken an indescribable beating lately.

As for your 2nd question, the widest channel in these rear S-02s that I have here is slightly less than 1/4 of an inch. The widest channel on the front is a little MORE than 1/4 inch.

The PP's channels are NOTICEABLY wider than these and you can tell the difference just by looking, but it helps to have them side by side.

My questions were more to do with the nature of the construction of the tire. My 2nd set of fronts wore out in 3 track days and the way they wore was COMPLETELY different than how the stock tires wore. The same goes for the 2nd set of rear tires, but there is a teeny tiny bit of tread left. Yet, they chunked really bad and had pieces missing out of them at a regular interval.

I hope that this tire mystery can be put to bed soon...at least for my next set, I know they are the right ones. But I'm also not going to track these tires...getting track tires for next year...

If it helps at all, I just used my vernier calipers to measure the actual tread width on nearly-new (~800 miles) OEM S-02s as delivered by Honda. The measurement was based on the crap stuck to the tire after driving the car rather than trying to measure "real" tread width. My merasurements were still somewhat objective but the fronts were just about exactly 6.0" while the rears were 7.8". Most importantly, the width difference can then be used to detemine what sizes should be used to match other tires to the same width. Unfortunately, it does NOT compare the difference in the void ratio (we all know that the fronts have a higher ratio of grooves to rubber than the rears).

In any event, it appears that the proper rear size for a typical 205 front tire is between 245 and 265 (depends on the exact tire model) to maintain the same relative width between the front and rears for stock handling.

Me? I'm gonna use 205 fronts and 245 rears for autocrossing (plus bigger front swaybar)...
