i picked up a second hand tonneau cover the other day. While installing, noticed it only required 4 “bolts” to secure. I had 2 additional bolts that seemed to be in the way. I noticed my rear glass contacting them too. I order to install the cover I had to remove the bolts.
is this a model difference?
was the cover different for AP1/2? I had previously used a piece of tape to keep the glass from hitting the bolt The other bolt was loose and dangling. Probably from the glass hitting/resting on it
There are four attachment points for the tonneau cover. Two are snaps on elastic straps at the front of the lobes of the cover. The other two are the ones in your pictures. The aft side of the cover just slides down between the top and the car.

yes, the cover is attached with 4 pins/snaps. In the picture however, are two additional pins and there was nowhere to attach them to the cover. Furthermore, they were in the way before I removed them.
cover is on, looks good and is secure. I have 2 extra pins bolts that appear to serve no purpose.
To my knowledge, there exist two different versions of the tonneau cover. One early and one later modell. Difference is the number of snaps / bolts / pins.

I wonder if the USA models differ from the ones going to the motherland in Europe. My 2009 Arizona car has 2/2 snaps. Not sure about the other years or locations.
I will have a look at mine. If i remember correctly, mine has 2 Bolts on each side = 4 Bolts.
Found this in the Internet:
"Model Year 2002
• The tonneau cover changed. There is only 1 clip on the each side to push in from underneath. The elastic bands straps on each side remain the same. Reportedly its easier to attach and doesn't appear to 'flap' up like previous design."
There was a recall for the AP1. The original tonneau cover would pinch the seatbelts if the seat was fully reclined, and that seemed to be a safety issue. The dealerships gave me two replacements, and I still have the original, but I have never compared the two to see the differences.
My recollection is that this recall did not change the number of snaps, but changed the shape of the cover itself so that it does not touch the seat belts.
This is a Service Bulletin, not the recall notice that I remember, but is clearly shows that the '00-01 has four snaps, while the '02-04 has two snaps. Since the AP1 is from '99-03, it seems that AP1 had two different designs, and the later design overlaps with the AP2.

for the record, my MY01 had a total of 6 snaps. 2 for the straps and 4 for the cover. I removed the 2 middle snap pins (which was also contacting the glass on my soft top) and the 4 snap cover fit like a glove.
I could get both sides in the sleeve but it was too wide to fit in the trunk cutout. I’m sure it would look pretty clean if I could fit it and have the vinyl side up.
