Default Top down time

Saw a co-worker the other day folding the convertible top of his BMW 3-series. Was surprised by how long it took. I'd say at least three times longer than on S2000, including latching. Fascinating process, but it's probably pain in the ### to have a car lke that as a daily driver.

Thus the question. Does S2K have the fastest opening/closing top among US-sold convertibles?

Yes, but BMW will argue no. When the S2000's top is down, the "process" is not complete because the top cover is not on. The Z4 has an integrated top cover so, though it takes longer to lower their top, they have completed the "whole process" first.

Screw the "whole process". At a red light, you can go from coupe to cab in about 7 seconds in the S. The bimmer needs much more time and red light changes aren't as feasible. One of the things I like about the S is that I can drop the top without having to pull over.

exactly.

most owners here have never even used the cover.

the miata's top does lower faster, though...you can just throw it back.

I feel sorry for the guy running around his Soltice trying to get the top down before the light changes.

Solstice, Sky, Miata - all the manual tops... when you drive around on a beautiful day, the tops are up on these cars because they are a pain to raise and lower. Power - another reason I love the S's top.

Yeah but have you seen how complicated it is to fold those tops? You gotta unhook and fold the little wing thingy without scratching the paint, then get in and lower.. oh wait, get back out open the clamshell, THEN get back in and lower the top, then get back out and close the clamshell....

Here you go, I got this from the Solstice's user manual. It explains everything on how to operate the top on one easy page!

I rarely took the top down on my MR2 Spyder because it was such a pain in the ass to do. You'd break your back trying to get it down from inside the car - bottom line; top is always down on the S. Can't beat taking it down in a few seconds at a stop light, very quick and easy.
