Torque for lugnuts?
I can agree with the "80 lbs. isn't quite enough" theory. After a nice 200 mile drive I decided to check mine and ALL but one of them had dropped below 80 lbs. I had just put on my wheels and torqued them down before we left.

It has nothing to do with doing it any tighter. When mounting your wheels you are supposed to re-touque them one more time after a long drive. All the tire shop will tell you to do that as well.
Torque to 80 ft. lb. then re-torque after a few miles. 80 ft lb. is the correct torque.
