[QUOTE=standard63,Oct 6 2004, 11:25 AM] I think if you go by yourself and use the passenger seat you should be able to get a week's worth of groceries in it. I also think you should try to testdrive an '00 and a newer '02 + one. I'm really not sure if there is a difference, but I testdrove an '01 before I got the M3 and wasn't too impressed, and then later tried an '02 and immediatley fell in love. I've heard this from a european car mag too, but it may just be in our minds. The '01 I drove wasn't maintained as well as my '02, and after having the M3 and trying the S again, I knew more what I wanted in a car.

Go on many testdrives if necessary, but it may only take one!

torque or not, the S2000 is as fast or faster than the M3 coupe.

You won't find a decent, clean S2000 for under $18K. Salvage title and high mileage may get you a tick under it, but S2000s hold their value well.
I picked up my 01 about 8 months ago for 19,500 with only 17k miles, perfect title nothing wrong with the car. When I was looking for s2000's I saw some with around 40-60k miles going for around or less than $18,000, some even around $16,000.

Actually the first US spec arrived in 94 - just like the S2000 arrived in '99 not 2000. I personally know someone who had one of the first US '95s - obtained I believe in August/September of '94. The car was in fact reviewed way back in the July '94 (June 1 on the shelves) issue of Car and Driver - The cover had a photo of a Dakar Yellow M3 with the inside front wheel in the air while cornering and proclaimed:
"BMWM3
Get this:
240 ho,
5.6 to 60
$36,000!"

I still have that mag. It took me 3 years almost to the day 'till I got mine - Dakar Yellow, just like on the C&D cover.

BTW - I carry all my wheels in the S2000 to autocrosses. 3 in the cabin, and one in the trunk. I also carry a full size racing jack (the new cheap types), and extra gear. The S2000 trunk is way more usefull than say the one on a MR2. You can definitely carry tennis bags and such in it. As I said, I drove it as a daily driver/autocross toy for a year and was only marginally inconvenienced (had to ask my brother to help me carry my extra wheels to get the r-comps mounted - 4 wheels and 4 extra tires = to much for S2000).

Still, I'm looking at getting a trailer if I keep my S2000. It used to be much easier to just toss the extra wheels in the back of the M3 after an event. With the S, you have to go through an elaborate process of neatly packing everything in the car - not enjoyable after I've just been soundly beaten in BS by NJTom2000 .

The first generation M3 is my favorite and is the closest in ride to the S2000.
I finally got to drive one of those last year. Definitely S2000 like. What an awesome car the E30 M3 is(was).

I considered an E46 M3 for a minute before I bought the S2000, then decided that if my E36 was a touch over my limit of 3000 lbs, the E46 was definitely obese. National autocross results (or lack thereof) have borne that (or something) out.

Watch out, even 911's are getting too heavy -the new 997 is now over 3K lbs!

Yeah i posted another thread in this section in the differences between 00-01 and 02+ Haven't gotten a definite answer on the how different the gearing is but it seems like mostly exterior differences (wind screen, top). I'm starting to think it might not be reasonable for me to have such little space cause i was planning on selling my daliy driver (92 sentra SE-R) to get a bike and a s2000+bike means i can't carry anything anywhere.
You know if you're thinking of getting a bike (I'll pretend you mean sport not cruiser - ignore if the latter) look on Bimmerforums for a post by 'Phantom' and see why in this instance the M3 is awesome. He tracks both his M3 and his bike - he tows the bike with the M3! He's done track events where he's spent one day on the bike and one in the M!

I'm looking at getting onto a bike - almost exclusively for track duty. Guess what the tow vehicle is going to be .

Anyway, go find a dealer with a used S2000, they'll usually let you test drive it. If they don't let you wind it out (and don't be afraid to) go find another dealer. You will not do the car justice if you don't get to play in the upper rev zone. Find a turn or two as well. And hammer those brakes, they're pretty dang good stock. A sedate test drive may not be the way to go as the car may just seem to anemic under 6K.

[QUOTE=1slowM3,Oct 5 2004, 12:51 AM]I looked on my local autotrader and found a bunch of 00-02's with about 60 or less K miles starting @ 15.5 up to around 18-19ish which isn't too bad. I anticipate being able to sell my M3 for around 16 or so and i wouldn't mind dropping a grand to get a car that's 3-4 years newer.

Does anyone get frustrated driving their s2k in town at partial throttle @ city speeds like getting off the line at a light? I really don't want to have to rev my car to 5-6K in 1st and 2nd to be able to get moving and from the lack of torque on paper i suspect that might be a problem. I can shift under 2500 rpms in every gear in the M and still accelerate comfortably due to the 3.2L torque.

Besides the clutches/transmissions being really weak in the s2k are there any other inherent design flaws? Lastly does anyone in TX with a s2000 want to trade for my M3 plus some cash

M3 looks jus like the rest of the 3 series. it does not significantly stand out. And most people dont even know its a honda or havent even seen the car. I like the look on peoples face when they see my car. theyre like wtf is that a porche?
Only people that know what my car is , are the car enthusiats. I like that cuz like the other guy said, that just means there isnt a bunch of people out there with my car. When I think of BMWz most of the time i think of an old man with money, when i see an S2000 i think of a spirited driver in an exotic car.

E36 M3's weren't very impressive at all imo. The S2K trumps the E36 in many aspects. E46 M3 is another story, but there's really no hands down winner. It comes down to preference. Torque down low or hp up high (REALLY high)
That's a ridiculous statement.
