Trade-in values?
Anyone have any experience trading in their S2K? In particular to upgrade to a newer MY. Did your dealership stick to the KBB pricing trade-in value pricing? Get any good deals while trading in? Or for the most part did the dealers try to screw you and short change ya? Any experiences whatsoeveR?
Thanks.
Thanks.
This is kind of a silly question. Are you planning on trading your S2000 in? Or are you just asking out of curiousity?
Every dealership is different, every region is different, every deal is different, every used car is different, every person is different and you'll be stuck listening to only one sided answers (especially with your "screw you" question).
Also keep in mind that people value their own personal vehicles in emotions; which, always makes his or her car worth that much more than the highest trade in value KBB, Edmunds, or Black Book says it is worth - every car is excellent

Completely out of curiousity, don't own a S2K... yet
but the reason I ask is mainly because there are quite literally none in this area, dealerships around here really don't carry any, and if they do, they're in the showrooms looking pretty. So basically if I were in a few years down the road decide that they make an AP3 or something like that, something that catches my eye better, trying to do a local sell to a private party will be very very hard to do because apparently there is little interest in them for whatever reason in this area.
And I hear what you're saying, just lookin for some kind of consensus I guess? For example, I've never been to a used car sales place that they haven't more or less tried to screw it to you, a few honest ones out there, but for the most part anytime I've gone to one, you have to be VERY skeptical about ANYTHING they say to you. Also that's the reason why I was using the KBB trade-in as a concrete number, everyone thinks their particular car is worth a different amount (realizing that even more in the situation I'm in now), to see if dealers would stick ot that. As compared to asking if people thought they got what THEY thought their car was worth.
Sorta a feeler I guess more than anything, good points though, thanks for the response.

Depends on the time of the month as well. Some dealers have set sales numbers they are expected to meet. If they are below those numbers at the end of the month, they will jack the price up on the car they are selling (to meet the quota), but will also raise the value of the trade in by the same amount. I had a 2003 Mazda Protege5 with 50k on it. KBB trade in was 9300. Proctor Honda was below quota, and they gave me $11000 for it which was really close to private party value (about $500 off, but there is NO tax on a trade in, so it was a wash).
It also depends on whether they are going to sell the trade on their lot (and make a profit on the markup), or if they will send it directly to auction (any car over 100k miles).

For the s2000 the black book value is much higher. It is honestly a good 10% more than kbb. I sell cars, if you want me to get you the auction value and black book value on your car I can. just pm me the specs of your car, paintwork, miles year. also remember that when trading in you dont pay taxes on the amount of your trade. example: 30000 for new s2k minus 16k for your car = 14k taxable.
Also if your buying new, dont go into a dealer. email the high volume dealers in your area, then take the lowest quote to your local dealer and ask them to beat it by $100.

recently looked at a 98' Supra Twin Turbo at local Honda dealer (chicago) and they offered me $ 21,000 in trade for my 00' with 7,600 mi. on it. My car is show room condition with many mods. Ultimately decided to keep it and go with s/c.
Well, I was also curious and when I went to the local Honda dealership to look at the new '06 I told them that I was going to trade in my S. It is in mint shape with only 13,9xx miles on it at the time (this was last November). They told me $14k without looking at it. Hmm. Too bad they didn't have any '06s in stock.

Thanks for the responses, that's what I'm trying to get a feel for.
Blackbook thing is interesting, and actually I've been using the invoice number for the starting point for my negotiation for a new 06, because all the dealerships I've been talking to, I'm pretty sure they don't sell ANY S2Ks, so I'd be a once in a blue moon thing for them.
faster, not sure what kind of mods you had, but for a 5-6 year old S2K, that's a pretty decent *trade-in* value, I mean if you could convince them to only charge you like 8-9k for a brand new 06, that's a pretty decent deal imo.
however NDAZONE, that looks a LITTLE low for what I'd be expecting, but rather realistic for a 5-6 year old car, my guess is you probably could have pushed them to give you a thousand more? or at least take a thousand more off the purchase price of the new one?
This definitely gives me agood grasp though, thanks. If anyone else has any input that'd be great.

to many mods to list all but majors include 18" SSR Comps, Fujitsibu exhaust, AEM cai, Stoptech slotted rotors w/ceramic pads. As stated car is perfect NEVER rain or snow. Very low miles for an 00'. This particular Honda dealer specializes in modded cars so the trade in offer may have been higher than you would expect. Hope this helps
