I currently have 4 horns(truck horns) mounted infront of the radiator. They work good but dont seem as loud as they once were. Its probably me just getting used to them but I always wanted to purchase train horns. Do you think they would be able to fit in any location in the s. I know I could try to fit it infront of the bumper sideways but im not sure if that would work.. I found these horns on ebay and here are the demensions
Compact Design - We had to keep "the length" to keep "the distinct sound." But we were able to narrow the trumpet flares and shrink the manifold width. So the height & width of our horn is tight 6" x 6", about the same as a dollar bill. The horn bundle, including manifold, is 15" long. Our horns will fit under the hood or on the frame of almost any vehicle.
The compressor that they were selling with this unit is pretty small. Probably the size of a two shoes stacked together. Finally, I found some air tanks which were around 14" long and about 6-7 " high and wide.
I have currently four chrome horns infront of the radiator which ive seen pics of other members do here. I think they look great but the sound isn't their anymore. Xviper, if you have a train horn setup, please post on where you mounted everything. I wanted to push around 130 to 150 psi..
Out of curiosity...why do you want train horns instead of a high quality set of "standard" truck horns?
I heard a train horn blown from underneath a Mercedes Benz last weekend and it was ridiculously loud. Fortunately, I was standing about 50 yards away when they guy blew it. There were some people standing right in front of it, and he did it to show off/be an ass. If I had been that close I would be in jail as I would have dragged him out of his car and broken several of his limbs.
Maybe I'm a little sensitive about my ears as I am a musician and value my hearing bigtime. I do feel our stock horns "blow", and I want to upgrade mine as well however a train/locomotive air horn seems a little excessive.
Not trying to flame anyone...just curious as to the effectiveness of a good set of air horns versus something that could be potentially harmful(permanently) to someone's hearing.
Mine is not a train horn. It's off our firetruck. I don't have it on the car because of several reasons. The place I was going to mount it is now taken up by the front mount intercooler. But worse, I have not found a system to produce and store that kind of usable pressure and volume that will fit on the car. I'm still pondering this situation and have not abandoned the idea.
This was a joke:
I have since done more work on the horn to reduce its size but not affect its sound level and quality:
It's still pretty big. I have also found what I believe will work for this horn: http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product...5+10201/c-10101
It's now a matter of finding the space to mount it all. It's best to keep the tank as close as possible to the horn itself to reduce the run of hose. I've found that the horn will work without diminished sound volume and quality down to as little as 50 psi. Of course, the more the better. However, anything above 100 psi won't generate any louder sound.
NOTE: Is your air horn of the type that needs to be "tuned"? Most truck airhorns (and I imagine train horns are the same) can be tuned and can easily go out of tune and make very little noise. On a firetruck airhorn, you must rotate the trumpet part to just the right position to get the most sound out of it. Oh, do this with earmuffs. They can go out of "phase" through vibration and handling. We have to tune ours about once every year or two and this is in a case where the horns are not handled off the rig.
