Default Tranny Grind in '02 S2000

well my pops is takin his '02 S2000 in to the dealer this afternoon to have them check out the transmission. It's griding in fast up shifts from 1st to 2nd. Also its real knotchy and requires a little force to get in any gear sometimes, and other times it just slips into gears with no effort at all. Strange?!

I know the '00-'01 had factory transmission recalls on this similar problem, but was supposed to be fixed in the '02's. Again, Strange?! the mechanic their said this as well, and he said that its the first time he is getting a '02 in for tranny work. gonna be a 3-4 day ordeal

My dad and I wanted to change the tranny fluid from the get go, when he first got the car, but decided to stick to the Honda MTF since the tranny isnt the best part on the car, and if we changed the fluid and put in Redline MTL (which is awesome) and the transmission still grinded, then Honda might want to blame the grinding on the Redline fluid. so he's kinda glad that we didnt change it.

Anybody with an '02 have this problem or experience grinding or knotchy shifting in an '02? kinda sucks to have this kinda problem in a new car, especially when Honda "supposedly" fixed it.

i have it every once in a while. Doesn't really bother me. I suppose i'll bring it in sometime before the warranty expires but i doubt i will anytime soon.

the first time it grinded from 1-2, i thought it was a fluke and i just messed up, that was like 3 months ago. (i dont live at home anymore and that was the last time i drove the car, i went home for this weekend though) but recently, like 2 days ago, i was drivin and accelerated in 1st to about 7200rpm then shifted fast to 2nd, and grinded. again, i thougth it was a fluke and slowed down, put it in 1st and tried again, making sure that i was pressing the clutch all the way, and GRINDDDDDDD. it did it back to back!! then later on that day, i met my dad at his job and drove home along side him, i told him about the grind and i tried to see if i could make the car do it again. he was driving along side me in his accord listening and watching as i again accelerated to about 7500rpm and shifted fast (but making sure to have pressed the clutch all the way) to 2nd and GRINDDDD. shocked the hell out of him, because it never grinded when he was driving it (he doesnt really shift too fast). i slowed down and did it again with same big grind. when we got home he went and drove it and it grinded once with him.

it doesnt do it all the time, but it does happen. and when i shift and it grinds, its not even all that fast, its not like a power shift or anything. im afraid to try and shift faster...transmission might explode and fall out.lol

good to see that other owners/cars are experiencing the same problem. s2000 transmission is uhhh, could be better!

Just wanna set this straight:

Grinding means that you can actually feel and hear the "gears" grinding, that you cannot get it in gear and you have to go back to neutral and do it again.

Notchiness is different, you can still get it in gear, but there is more resistance and normally you hear a "click".
of course.
it does both.

I have an '02 with 11,500 miles on it.
I have had no problems at all!
And based upon an autox and a highspeed driving school this year with it, I would say I'm more of the aggressive type driver than laid back kind.

My tranny is difficult to shift when cold (like most cars I've driven) but once warmed up is very smooth. The most noticeable change is going to first while moving if the fluid is cold. To do it quickly I have to accurately double clutch, otherwise there is a noticeable delay and spool time for the syncros to do their magic. This isn't a problem for me since I double clutch every downshift anyway.

The grinding problem when cold may be a result of a similar situation... If the syncros aren't working right becuase of cold fluid, the tranny can grind. Remember that everything in a car has to warm up, not just the engine. Transmission, suspension, tires, brakes, seals - everything - is designed to operate in a certain temperature range. Too cold or warm and they don't work correctly.

The only times I've ground my dogs were my own fault...
