I was driving somewhat spirtied and got near redline in 1st, then went into 2nd and felt a violent feeling from the transmission case. Is this normal?

Drive it hard again. If it reoccurs take it back to the dealer to have it checked out. If not just drive on.

Can you elaborate a little more? What do you mean by 'a violent feeling'? Did it grind, shudder, make a noise?

Sounds like maybe the clutch pedal was not in all the way. Also, the engine may not have been at an rpm that would match the speed of the wheels in 2nd gear.

you probably weren't in the correct RPM for the next gear. if you were really off then the car will shudder.
