Default Trunk Leaking Please Help!

Hi,

I have been getting water in the trunk of my 2006 S2K since I purchased it used last February. I doubt the previous owners knew about the leak since they were in Cali and New Mexico, but here in PA we get rain. It doesn't happen with a short rain or through the car wash, only with heavy or persistent rain.

I first sealed the vent then checked the taillights, checked the top drains, etc, basically anything I could find via search. I finally spread baby powder around the truck and doused it with a hose in every crack, etc. When I placed the hose in the top and left it there for awhile to simulate a long rain and when I opened the trunk (with the water still running) I finally saw where it was coming from. On the drivers side of the trunk in the back from the top (see attached photo). It is coming from under where the red circle is. I tried to take a photo up there but I cannot see where the leak is coming from, but there seems to be a plastic hose there and some retaining clips. Please help me identify what this leak is and how to fix it!

Thanks!!
Matt

that leak area looks like probably coming from the rear rain gutter not installed properly. at the base of the soft top at the bottom of the rear window, drivers side.

has the soft top been recently replaced. i work at the dealer, had replaced the softtop on my s2000 and had the same type of water leak because i had to just happen to have one small section of the rain gutter not tucked underneath the weatherstrip. just re tucked it under better and leak was fixed. if the rain gutter is not tucked behind the weatherstrip, some water may be able to seep in between the soft top rear run channel and body. instead of the water collecting in the rear rain channel and draining out in front of each rear wheel.

i effin hate water leaks

Thank you so much for your quick reply! I have a service manual, will that tell me how to access the gutter and weatherstripping? If no, can you provide some details as to how I access it?

Thanks!

Any rips in your top? even small ones near the bottom corner by the side window?

the rear tray and possibly the roll hoops need to be removed. it is quite a big task if you do not know what you are doing. remove the rear tray in the numbered sequence. as in the factory svc manual. for my car i was able to remove the rear tray, and loosen everything he bolts down or screws down the roll hoops covers. you need to access the rear metal trim piece that bolts down the rear of the soft top (called rear lower convertible top retainer). look under soft top removal in the svc manual and follow the steps all the way till you have the interior out and rear of the soft top unbolted. hopefully you have the factory svc manual and not a generic one, i do not know how good those are. for the factory svc manual look at page 20-40 shows how the rear rain rail is correctly installed and shows how it should be tucked under the rear molding. rear tray removal starts on page 20-73. but need to also remove both side rear trims as in page 20-72 to be able to loosen/remove the roll hoops.

hope this will shine some light on your problem.

buy the way, do you know if your top was ever replaced. this usually only happens after soft top replacment.

Hi i had this problem too. i could put my finger through the hole right at the bottom of the rear window panel, behind the outer one.
what i did was squirt a load of silicone right into the hole..that cured it.

Thanks for the info! I have the Honda factory service manual so I should be fine (I consider myself fairly handy, I do most things myself minus things that require a lift). I do not know if the top was replaced, I do not believe so as the top now has a 2" tear on the passenger side where they all wear (on the top) but the car apparently was involved in an accident and I know the front windshield was replaced and the first owner had a hardtop installed. But the top may have been replaced as the roll hoop covers were definitely opened and the rear tray is missing a few clips.

I did not know about the accident, etc when I purchased the car and I picked it up in New Mexico and didn't notice anything. I only found out when the door was dented and I took it to a body shop. I just don't have $2k to replace the top so it may be something I will undertake next spring...that seems like a long job!

Thanks again, I will let you know what happens as soon as I work on it.

Take Care!
Matt
