Default Trunk Springs

I've done a couple of searchs here, but found only minimal info. I'm curious, is it really necessary to change out the springs when adding an OEM trunk spoiler (not the wing)? As long as the trunk pops open just enough to lift by hand I'm fine with that.

Anyone that has installed them... or not, let me know.

Thank you!

You don't need the provided HD springs. I've installed both the OEM lip and the OEM wing. Both are still using the stock springs no problem. All you need is for the spring to pop the lock when released. Neither the stock spring nor the HD ones will actually lift the trunk lid up and once you manually raise it to the vertical position, even the stock springs is enough to keep it up.
Use the HD ones if you are obsessed with the idea of using what they give you, but they'd make great weenie roast sticks if you hack off one end.

I was wondering what to do with those???

Anyway, Xviper is right, you do not need to install the springs in order to "pop" the trunk. It will function just fine with stock springs. The only difference you may notice...a "tiny" bit more effort is required to lift the trunk. Once the trunk lid is fully open, it will stay upright.

P.S.-If you plan to install the spoiler yourself, please check out "Xviper's..."How to article" in the Tech section of "Under the Hood"! Trust me...his instruction will help save you from ruining your trunk lid!!!

There is an easy solution to this. I found that by lifting a beer to my mouth about twice as much as I was accustomed to, strengthens my biceps just that "tiny" bit so as to offset the added effort required to lift the trunk lid without the HD springs. However, the additional sit-ups I have to do to get rid of the "beer belly" may not be worth it. Heck, forget what I just posted, put the damn HD springs in.

Yeah I am planning on doing it myself... just a little apprehensive about drilling the trunk lid. I'll check out the "how to" info. Thanks for the heads up!
Like you, I was apprehensive about drilling my trunk lid. That is why I recommended "Xviper's" how to. In his thread, he mentions some simple ways to avoid making mistakes. Also, some handy suggestions from keeping the metal particles from scratching your paint. The drilling part is actually very easy when you use the template!

What ever you do, don't take his "beer" suggestion until after you complete your installation!

Here's another reason not to install the HD springs: if you ever decide to go back to a naked trunk lid (yeah, you'll have to get the holes filled), you won't have to dig out your OEM springs and put them back on.

And, while the HD ones aren't needed for the spoilers, they aren't a good idea to use with a naked trunk lid, unless you want to create a sort of catapult to launch things at your hood. I went through this with another car, and it was quite amusing -- and, I think, not good for the trunk hinges over the long run. HPH
