Trunk v. laptop

I think you're overly worried about it.
My lenovo runs at least at 140 (Using the program speedfan). Good luck getting your trunk to 180+. Heat won't do much, its just bad for longevity for a laptop to be running hot.
I don't trust under my passenger seat. I kept my mp3 played under there, and every so often when I pulled it out it would be cut to hell, the metal literally scraped off leaving sharp areas. My thought is the passenger moved the seat around and a seat rail did the damage, but I honestly have no clue how it happened so now I don't keep it under there out of paranoia.

I think you're overly worried about it. The internals of a laptop probably get hotter during a couple hours of use than they will in your trunk when it's off.
i work in electronic cooling and if the computer is off you should have no problem. most of those parts in consumer electronics are rated to temperatures around +85°C (thats +185°F for you 'mericans
) and i doubt you'll be getting anywhere near that with the computer off.now if your computer was doing hardcore computations while in an enclosed trunk with very little ventilated air it'd be a whole different story...
