Trying to price a S2K with some modifications - fathers car
Hello everyone! My father had bought a 2001 S2000 back in 2007 and its been with him ever since. Unfortunately he unexpectedly passed this summer and I'm trying to figure out what the value of his S2k is. I would like to keep it in the family but need to attempt to value the car. I will make a list of everything that I can remember about the car which is what is bringing the questions of value.
I'm sure there are a few things I missed, but that is the most part. I will try to post a few photos that I have of the car. It hasn't been driven in the last two years (not due to any issues with the car) and it does need a re-tune to bring the AEM back to a stockish tune as its still running its former tune.
- 2001 Spa Yellow with factory hard top (and factory color - not respray)
- ~100k miles (106 seems to come to mind but its in the low 100k range)
- Car was in a side impact before he owned it, we know that the front fender and door were replaced and that side of the car was resprayed. (Never pulled a carfax that I am aware of)
- Car was the first turbo S2K in the area and was tuned by Elite Motor Sports here in Minneapolis. All the turbo equipment has been removed except...
- AEM Programmable ECU w/ I want to say like 1000cc RC injectors.
- Replacement engine & Transmission w/ similar mileage (Factory engine failed due to poor tuning) is all stock except for injectors.
- Car does NOT have the air pump, O2 sensor or other emission items as the wiring was cut and my dad was unable to locate where it was cut.
- Car currently has a different key tumbler as he was trying to convert it back to the stock ECU but ran into issues with above bullet. Somewhere factory key tumbler should be around the garage
- 10in punch sub in a JL box in the trunk and an Alpine head unit with audio control by steering wheel works
- 6.5in speakers behind the seats (In the roll bars)
- AP2 Rear bumper
- Leather shifter surround similar to AP2? But not the AP2 console
- Tien lowing springs
- Bronze ROTA Torque wheels that are factory AP2 staggered size
- Carbon Fiber engine bay covers
- Body is in good shape, a small dent in the rear quarter panel near the tail light, a few rock chips and scratches here and there - not a show car as it was his daily for many years in the summers.

Not sure why you need a "value" unless you're selling it. You can insure it for whatever you want if you pay the premiums.
Personally everything on your list below the factory hardtop (which are selling in the $4,000+ range) detracts from the value -- value meaning what you can sell it for -- so start working your way down from what would be a $20K car.

To me, that seems like a $10-15k car. Crash history, has mechanical shortcomings, AP2 rear bumper, etc. The hardtops are crazy overpriced though, they seem to be listed for 6,000+ dollars lately but I struggle to believe people are foolish enough to actually pay that.
I’m sorry for your loss.

Let me provide a little context to a price point - I would like to take ownership of the S2K however I would like to buy it from my mother for a fair price. I want to be able to provide her and show her while HIS S2k may not be worth what some others out on the internet sell for, like if you were to look at Bring A Trailer or Cars and Bids.
Have your Mom list it on BAT with all the warts you listed and you bid on it. Seriously this will get her the best fair price. If you get the car cheap and feel guilty you can always gift her some cash.

I think it's roughly a $10k car with $5k sitting on the roof (hardtop). Body damage and unoriginal engine hurt value significantly. It would help a lot if there's documentation on the engine but still hurts value. Is it an AP2 engine?
With the ECU setup the way that it is, that car cannot legally be registered in a ton of areas throughout the country. It will not pass emissions and it's clear that it can't without significant work/retrofitting. That decreases the value in a huge way.

Objects are only worth what you can sell them for. Putting the object on an auction site will quickly determine its value. The only way the OP could "lose" the car is if he doesn't want to pony up enough money for Mom. Doesn't need to be BAT as any auto auction will do.
