Default Up Shift - noises?

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but....

I only have 450Miles on the new car at this time, and when I upshift around 3000 to 4000:

1. clutch in
2. change gear (1 to 2)
3. slowing let up the clutch and at about mid point, start depressing the gas (trying to be smooth).
4. I hear some notchy noises as I continue with letting go of clutch and depressing the gas to a reasonable RPM (4000)
5. Repeat the action to upshift.

Now, if I don't start depressing the gas as I let up the clutch (step 3), there is no noise. The car drives fine but I'm just not used to the noise. Is it supposed to be there?

Thanx

Without being there, I couldn't be positive of what's going on but from what you wrote, it might seem that you are too slow in your technique and what you are hearing could likely be simply the clutch plates rubbing against each other as they slip past. If you do the shift in a more "expeditious" fashion, your clutch should engage immediately and you'd be on your way - hardly any rubbing at all. Does it make a similar noise when you move off from a dead stop? That's when your clutch would slip the most.

My car makes kind of a growl both when letting off the gas and getting back onto the gas during a shift.

Pretty cool, but I wondered why that is. Could it be the air pump pushing extra air into the exhaust and some unburnt gasoline burns in the exhaust?

my car does the same exact thing. i always wondered what was happening. this happens for me at any upshift... in 1st... clutch in... in 2nd... clutch out slowly... gas slowly... then i hear a rattle sound? notchy sound?? the sound is really hard to describe. but like optional g said, if i let the clutch up all the way first before i gas, or i gas slower... no sound. i figured it was the way i was driving cuz if i drive harder.. ie, do the clutch action a lot faster, there is no sound.

xviper... no sound when moving from a dead stop. i wonder what's happening.

Yes, Mike's experience matches mine exactly.

I've driven BMW 528 stick shift for 3 years and never had weird sounds with the same shifting method. I can feel the point of engagement with the clutch, but if I do anything with the gas, I always get the rattles.

From dead stop, there is no rattling sound.

1 to 2 and 2 to 3 shifts produce the rattling sound for a bit until the clutch is fully engaged - if I start stepping on the gas (slowly to about a quarter way down.)

Now I just fully engage the clutch and then ease in the gas. Way more smooth in regular traffic.

If I want some acceleration (still keeping it under 5.5k rpm), I'll hit 5 and clutch, shift, clutch-and-gas relatively fast - there is still a very slight amount of the rattling noise.

I guess this is just how it's supposed to sound. Just kind of bothers me when my friend (drives an NSX) was asking about the "weird noise" when he was sitting in my car....

I'm stumped. Other than the "clutch chatter" thing, I don't have a clue. If it gets louder, have it checked out.

I have recently bought an 01 s2000 and I also seem to hear this noise. Did anyone manage to find out why this is or is this just normal for these cars?

It's not proper shifting technique to let off the gas as you release the clutch on an upshift. You want the RPMS to stay where they will be when you release the clutch in the next gear (rev matching)

I'd say let someone drive it who can diagnose a problem like this.

Whoa, ancient thread. Anyway, sounds kinda like this TSB: https://www.s2ki.com/stor/library/TSB/A00-054.pdf

I will say though that my car has a brand new OEM clutch, disk and throwout bearing and it still makes this noise. I think you just have to better time your application of the gas pedal.
