Default Using jack stands

I want to put my S on jack stands to change the oil and filter for the first time and am uneasy about how to initially get it jacked up with a floor jack. I was just in the garage looking underneath the front to see where I could position the floor jack but am not quite sure. There is a steel cover in the center of the front frame rail that looks like it might be a good site to lift with the floor jack. Any advice? I don't want to damage my new car, ya know.

You might have some difficulty getting your floor jack under the car. To remedy this I constructed, out of 2x10s some ramps.

You buy a 2x10x10' and have it cut into 2 2' sections and 2 3' sections. Bevel the leading edges with a belt sander (or very carefully a radial arm saw set to bevel) and place a 2 foot section on a 3 foot section. Glue and screw them together.

You will need 4 to lift the entire car. You can only go 2 planks high as three won't fit under the body.

To change your oil, you don't need jack stands, just 4 of these ramps to drive onto. You might want to install a Fumoto Oil Valve

With this you can do your oil changes from above, without raising the car. Go to www.fumotovalve.com for info on the valve and do a search of this board for threads about it.

Finally, this is what an S looks like on jack stands. I did this to paint the calipers.

Good luck.

I had originally posted an incorrect link to Fumoto. Thanks to tritium_pie I have now edited the previous post with the correct link. It is

I deeply appreciate the advice and link to another thread that had excellent pics. It really makes things much easier knowing that I can change the oil without lifting the car. I'm defintely going to order the Fumoto valve as I have one on my pickup truck.

Make sure that you order the adaptor as well. It will not fit without the adaptor.

If you get this with the nipple, is there something that will attach there to drain the used oil into?

You have to get a piece of tubing to slide over the nipple. As you can see from my photo, I have the nipple, but I just slide a "low profile" drain pan under the car and let it fill.

I intend to get a Rick's (formally DiGrappa) cross brace soon. I don't know if the oil will get on it. If that happens I'll get and use some tubing. I think the tubing is relatively cheap and available at most "homeowners" stores like Home Depot.
