Shifting below 4,000rpm, taxis around me are pulling away.

Rev to 9k and taxis still leave you in the dust here.

The car has 128,000 miles

Now my question is, is it okay to rev over 4,000 on an S2000 with that many miles?
I realize that revving below 4k saves gas, and revving above 4k is for fun. The previous owner somewhat took care of the S2000, but I don't think he fully took care of it.

Edit:
It looks like people took this thread a different way then what I was thinking. I just wanted to post this, to ask if I could use my S2k for what it should be with the mileage it has.

mine has 2k miles less than yours and gets pushed to redline a few times a week. Also have a civic with nearly 200k on it and it still gets pushed to redline (given the rarity that I drive it). they'll be fine, just make sure they're properly maintained, keep an eye on the oil level (as vtec systems are designed to burn a bit), and wait until its properly warmed up.

TLDR: don't worry about the mileage and just have fun with it

As always, miles are just miles. It's not the miles that matter but the care, maintenance and condition of the vehicle. Not an issue for one that was properly cared for. Could be an issue for one with less miles that wasn't cared for. Don't rely on miles alone to tell you these things.

For fun, sure. but revving above 4k is very important in some situations lol. The lack of torque in this thing could cause a potential accident on the freeway.

Have you read through this thread yet? If not, I strongly encourage doing so (and perhaps considering doing what it suggests you do). The FAQs here on this site are particularly helpful. A lot to digest, but all very good.

And if you have more specific technical questions about any of the suggested maintenance referenced, the Under the Hood subforum on this site is excellent.

+1. Follow the stuff in new owners thread. Change all your fluids. Change your plugs. Change your coolant (yes, I know coolant is fluid). Do a valve adjustment. Check your oil level frequently.

Then rev it to redline as often as you can. These engines were made for this. They can take it.

My first s2000 was an ap1. Bought it with a little under 100k miles on it. I had her for about 3 years and put 30-35k miles on it. She was my daily driver, and there wasn't a day where I didn't hit redline. I really beat that car up and had a lot of fun doing it. I really need to emphasize that... traction was broken everyday, rear end sliding out daily, vtec-ing everywhere... lol. When I got rid of her at about 130k miles, the entire time I had her I never had a problem. The worst was a minor valve cover gasket leak, my a/c went out, and a seized caliper. That's it. On top of that, one of the previous owners ran nitrous through my motor for who knows how long, and before that she was in a few accidents.

But due to good maintenance, oil changes, and just general care, she has never let me down. I wouldn't sweat it if I were you, you have a great engine. An old friend of mine was going on 220k on the original motor in his ap1. Everytime I saw him he was near or at redline haha. He never had any issues either. Take care of it, it will take care of you.

And just how frequently will traffic allow you to rev to redline?

In third gear at redline, my AP2 is at 75 mph. Where I'm at it's 10 over the max....

I hear you about using the car to it's potential, but on public roads in the US, it's prolly not happening....

In the fall I plan to install a HFC and a Flashpro and then get Gernsby to tune the thing where the VTEC engages about 3,500 rpm. That would be power I can use in daily driving.

This is my first sarcastic comment on this forum but WTH would you stay below 4k with a S? I think the running-in is over.
