Velcro strips around rear window??

Beneath where the top overlays the edges of the rear window, I have discovered a loose piece of velcro strap on each side. (MY02)

1) What are they there for?

2) What are they supposed to be connected to?

After many washings the two straps just fell off one day on MY02. I kept them but have no idea what they do. My guess would be they have something to do with shipping and protecting the glass in the top.

I think it is for an optional pad tha protects the rear window when its down (especially in the MY 00-01). I made a pad out of felt that hooks to the velcor straps to keep the plastic from scratching when you have it down for a long period of time. But I could be wrong.
