VTEC = Variable valve Timing and Electronic lift Control

Basically, VTEC is an engine management system that activates a camshaft change at 6,000 RPm. This change creates an awesomely loud engine note, gobs of power and a big

look at it as a mini boost (like a tubo) for the car and it kicks in when you go above 6,000 RPM.

Actually LordVagabond, I thought that too until a couple of months ago. It stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic control.
Very similar, but this way makes more sense.

Explanation:
A car can typically be tuned to give descent low-end power or descent high-end power. The choice is in the cams used.
A small displacement engine already lacks low end power because it's small right?
So manufacturers would just tune for optimum lowe-end performance to compensate. VTEC lets Honda tune for low-end and high-end by basically (but not really) switching to a new set of cams.
We actually have two sets of cam lobes (the part that decides how far and long the valves are open) for each valve.
