Default VTEC engagement point in 2004 model

I find myself wondering whether the VTEC engagement point has been changed for 2004. Currently, VTEC engages at 5900 rpm and the redline is 9000 rpm [or maybe, 8900]. Significantly, except for the 1 - 2 shift, any shift at or near redline, will leave one still in VTEC in the next gear.
For 2004, the redline has been reduced to 8200 rpm. If VTEC still engages at 6000 rpm, then upshifting near redline will probably leave you at slightly sub-VTEC rpm's in the next gear, which would not seem to be desirable. Does anyone have any hard information on the 2004 VTEC crossover rpm?

That comment has nothing to do with VTEC engagement point. It just points out that with the extra torque of the 2.2, it makes the same torque at 3000 as the present does at 6000. Looking at the crank torque curves in the Honda sales "training manual" (see thread of that name), it appears that the marked increase in torque, indicative of VTEC engagement, is about where it was with the 2.0L.

Further, it doesn't seem likely that a second, high rev, cam would kick in effectively as low as 3000 rpm, well below half of redline. Seems like it would defeat the purpose (high volumetric efficiency at very high revs).

OMG, lets clear up all this misinformation!

Pre-2004 Model
redline: 8900rpm
vtec: 6300rpm

2004 Model
redline: 8000rpm (*NOT* 8200rpm)
vtec: 5900/6000rpm (as indicated by most reviews so far)

As far as the power increase at 3000rpms ... the reviews are pointing to the fact that the power curve has been improved nicely even at low rpms. This has nothing to do with VTEC.
I hope this helps clear things up.

thanks for the info! i just test drove a 02 and took it to 7k with the dealer in the car, he said rev it up, but i didn't want to over do it! i felt something at around 6k, and it was awesome, almost like a turbo, even though i have never driven a turbo! this is why i finally became a member, i can't understand why anybody that owns a s2k would complain about anything! you don't know how lucky you are. i soon will be too, and i don't care if it has a plastic window or a glass, 15k redline or 8, just to own something like that, wow! i can't imagine how cool it would be to be able to rev to 9+k in a car, i am used to a miata.....great car, but NOT AN S2K!

i am 33, just so everybody knows, and i don't care about anything over 85 mph or so. just wicked fast 0-60 and 1+G handling, thats all. the only complaint i have about the s2k is the stereo, but i asume this is easy to fix!

i have a 92 miata which i love, but i have evolved, and need something faster.

i am hoping to find a smoking deal on a new 03 when the 04's become available, but i don't really care, you can't lose with either car.

nice to become a member to the forum!
