Default VTEC--first day--Dumb? question

I have finally gotten past the mandatory break in period. Today was my first day going into VTEC, and I have what may strike some of you veterans as a dumb question, but here it is? Does the WAY you accelerate have an effect on VTEC engaging (if that is the correct word). Seems that sometimes I feel it "engage" very clearly, othertimes, there is no surge. The rpms just keep increasing without that added burst of power. When I acclerate hard, that, is, "pedal to the meta,l" I can alwas tell when the VTEC engages. Is there a proper technique? Should I have the car checked? Once again, I am quite certain that sometimes there is nothing "out of the ordinary" when I het 6,000-6500 rpms. Am I doing it wrong? Expecting too much?
Told you it was a dumb question. Ok, a series of dumb questions. Thanks for your help. advice, patience.

if youre at half-throttle, youre still in vtec, but you wont get the kick.

vtec is more pronounced in the pre-04. I've driven both and it was one of the first things I noticed with my 04. You didn't mention what year you had.

Be careful of WOT VTEC engagement on curves and when it's wet... upsets the balance of car and can cause a little slide.

With regard to VTEC I have seen mention of VAFC, What does that refer to? Thanks.

VAFC = VTEC Air Fuel Controller
It lets you pull fuel so you can lean out your a/f ratios and you can also alter the vtec engagement point.

One thing you can try if you're worried ... this works for me, do your half throttle up to ~7000rpms or so and then floor the car. You should immediately feel the surge come on. Its already in VTEC, you just aren't pulling as hard because you're not on the throttle... But if you do it after you've already passed the engagement point you should immediately feel the surge in power.

I have an '04 though and I definitely feel a clearly defined surge in power past ~6000rpms. I've never driven a 2000-2003 to say whether there's a big difference or not though, but I get a nice kick when VTEC engages.

you should do some research on how VTEC actually works so you can truly understand what is goin on when you hit 6K rpm. The reason you get more of a kick at full throttle is simply because you are allowing more air in and at 6k, VTEC lets even more air in.

When only at half-throttle(or whatever) your letting less air in so at 6k vtec increases that, but not nearly as much as full throttle.

get a good intake and exhaust and you will really hear the VTEC orchestra.
