VTEC launch
I was "slipping" the clutch with my subaru but it was at only 3.000rpm, at this rpm the turbo was engaging...
I never had this "bad smell" but i was smelling this "smell" when i was looking other cars doing 1/4 miles runs.
I've done each friday nite 1/4 miles run during 6 months with my impreza and never experienced any clutch problem....

You want to break the tires loose a little bit rather than smoking the clutch. If you sidestep and don't break the tires loose a bit you are shocking the drivetrain WAY too much.
Watch how Indy cars smoke their tires after a pit stop. If they launch hard and don't smoke them a bit they break halfshafts. The spinning of the tires relieves the shock load like slipping the clutch normally would do.
