Default is this warranty worth the price?

i just bought (last tuesday) an 03 s2000 with 38,000 miles on it. it was certified pre-owned and comes with a comprehensive warranty to 1 year or 50,000 miles, as im moving to la (from san diego) for grad school, im sure i will hit 50k in 6-9 months. they have offered me a 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty for $1325.

within that period, i will probably buy wheels (hopefully 18in ultraleggera), tires and tein coilovers. probably not much else, hopefully a supercharger one day, but probably not in the next 3 years.

anyways, there are a lot of threads out there about what voids your warranty, so im not going to get into that, im just curious if you guys think it would be worth the money?

basically its 1325 for a comprehensive warranty that will cover my s2k between 5 years old and 7 years old. what kind of problems have some of you had in this time frame (doesnt have to be exactly in this time frame). would you get this warranty?

any and all thoughts are appreciated.

thanks,
Ryan Davis

Here's my experience. If it's a Honda aftermarket warranty, don't buy it. As soon as you do one mod Honda will void their aftermarket warranty on you. Apparantly aftermarket warranties are not subject to the same laws as a mfg vehicle warranty.

My dealer knew about this and got me a non honda aftermarket warranty, I've only used it twice, but they took care of me both times with it.

The "extended" warranty is NOT the same as the bumper-to-bumper that comes with the car. Most exclude smaller problems, and will not pay for repairs if you have any mods. I'd say take a pass... the vast majority of S2000s make it past 100k without any problems, assuming you maintain the car and don't cause any problems yourself. I'm at 66k... I've never taken the car to the dealer. Change my oil ever 5k, changed my rear tires once, and my front brakes once. Nothing else, ever. Don't sweat it.

PS... one more thought I always try to throw out when people consider buying the extendo...

My father was vp of customer service at a major motor co for 15 years. He said the single largest profit margin on any product, service, or accessory the company sold was the extended warranty... by almost double.

I got an an extended warranty when I bought my car a little over a year ago. It cost me about as much as they want to charge you, I didn't want it but I decided it might be a good idea since it was a used s2000 and it was hard to tell if the car was abused or not, so I bought it for the added security. Then about 10 months later the syncros went bad and I had to replace the whole transmission, I only had to pay the 100 dollar deductable, and all of the repairs and rental car were covered. So the warranty paid for more than itself. So in my opinion it was worth it becasue it saved me some money down the road.

BTW I have a 2000, and when I bought it, it had 30,120 miles

If you take stats in college you will not get the warranty. They are betting their car won't break and your betting it will. They do math on the average life of their car and are pretty accurate as to offer before the point the average car will have a serious issue... they use the bell shape curve and 3 standard deviations to make sure they have about 99%+ accuracy to make their money.

I'm on my 2nd S2000 and the only thing that messed up on my car was the convertible top, which was considered normal wear and tear and they refused to replace it.

Don't pay for the warranty. It's not worth it.

wow, thanks for all the quick replies, as of now im leaning toward not getting it, especially since the girl who did the original financing was out of town for a week and now its too late to finance it with the rest of the car so i would pretty much have to pay it all now. just to let you know, it is the honda usa warranty where there is 0 deductible and they will give you a rental car.

right now, im not thinking that much will go wrong in the next 2.5 years to add up to $1300, it is under warranty now, so im making them replace the seal around the windshield and fix the passenger side window regulator, im hoping that anything that will go wrong i will notice the symptoms of before 50,000 (total) miles.

one more question.... have you guys noticed any difficulty getting the transmission into reverse? sometimes it seems like it takes 3 or 4 tries to get the transmission to get all the way in. if i try to push it in, it stops just short of going into gear. i am making sure that they clutch is all the way down, and sometimes it helps if i pull forward an inch or 2 then it will line up better. i will definitely have the service department look at it, but i was just curious if this was a common thing with this transmission, or if its something i need to push with the service dept and make sure they fix.

thanks again,
Ryan
