Default WD-40 On The Paint??? WTF???

Just a little note...on one of the FAQs listed on this site, it says that an easy way to remove tar or glue off the paint is to use WD-40.

I know that it'll get the job done, but WD-40 is a solvent, and it'll eat the ---- out of your paint. So IMO, I'd highly discourage this process.

Any alcohol-based cleaner is generally not good for a car's finish.

If it is a solvent, it didn't affect my finish when I used it to remove one of my badges. It didn't work well, so I ended up using goo gone on the other badge.

Yes, unbeknownst to many people, WD-40 is a solvent. It eats away grime and rust which cause squeeks in hinges, this it gets rid of sqeeks and squeels like oil or graphite. Since its used like "oil" many believe it to be a lubricant. Anyways, despite the fact that its a solvent, it does work wonders on the glue and adhesives. Just remember to rewax afterwords to replace the wax in the areas affected. Its a pretty mild solvent but still you need to be cautious.

Active ingrediant in WD-40 is petroleum distillate. It will not harm the paint unless it is left on for an extended period of time. It will remove tar through disolution. When trying to remove substances remember not all things dissolve in the same "solvent".....try:

* Water
* Petroleum (WD 40)
* Alchohol
* Ketones (MEK)

These four classes of compounds will dissolve most anything.......

Once the paint has cured, most common solvents, including lacquer thinner, will not damage it, provided they are not left on the finish for long.

I've used it on crome for years, Never a blemish,

and here's another fact incase you didn't know, WD-40 was actually invented as a relief for arthritis, but didn't meet FDA approval, so know its an all purpose lubricant, etc.

careful!!! MEK [methyl ethyl keytone] is Pretty Strong Shit and will remove or damage most finishes... [it will do a job on lung tissue and brain cells as well....and a respirator won't help as it will be absorbed transdermally..]
