Default What is it?

So, after 9 years of original ownership, yesterday while washing my car, this 8" long piece of velcro falls off the roof. There were two pieces of velcro running parallel to the sides of the rear window on the underside of the roof that overlaps the sides. One fell off on its own, and the other was loose, so I removed it. They appear to have been glued on.

Check your roof, do you have these velcro strips? Any idea what function they perform?

My guess: while the car was new it was shipped with some sort of protective material covering the rear glass that had the matting piece of velcro.

My original top had them iirc, maybe they're supposed to keep the top from flapping during highway speeds?

The exact same thing happened to me. There have been some threads discussing this, saying that they prevent flapping or vibration at high speeds.

Did you ever noticed a difference once they were removed?

I guess I'll hold on to them in case I find I need to re-install them.

I think they are used to cushion the glass window from the convertible top .....

Hello there.
I have a 2003 and I'm the original owner.
As in your case I noticed these strips of velcro on the rear window whilst washing the car some years ago.
They run vertical (If memory serves) at either side of the rear window.
Mine were only partially unglued so I was able to glue them back to their original positions.
I doubt their function was only for shipping and suspect -as many have posted here- that they probably limit flapping of the top against the glass window along those borders.
My suggestion: Glue them back on.
Cheers,
Daniel

I hear you about the possible functions the velcro strips could perform, but what baffles me is that if they do perform a function, why velcro and why not permanently install them to the top -- glued to the top, really? Sounds very un-Honda like to me. If they were meant to stay on the top, why not sew them on?

100% agree with you.
Velcro strips? Seems pretty flimsy for Honda standards but unfortunately I think that's the case.
Either way their function is minimal so no worries.

Daniel

Maybe they thought they might try the Lotus approach. On the Elise, pretty much everything is held on with Velcro. It's crazy... especially in comparison to the usual build quality of a Honda.
